Hello,

Posting after a very long time :)

So we picked up our new MY16/Landmark last week. Very excited indeed. Drives like a dream, I will post my first impressions (going from MY13 LR4 LUX NAV8 to MY16 SCV6) soon.

But here is a thing that we noticed the first night we drove it from the lot to home. As we got out of the car (and even inside with windows down a bit) we smelled something burning (like oil combined with slight plastic or rubber or something). I shrugged it off thinking its a new car, things may just be heating up and settling in etc even though nothing like that had ever happened when I had picked up my 06 LR3 and then 13 LR4 (both new).

Everything seems fine under the hood, no spillage splatter, etc. and no pool/puddle or anything on the ground under the vehicle as well.

I did however notice "Overfilled" instead of "OK" when checking oil level via the Service menu. So I was like it may just be one time thing. By now over the course of about a week, I have seen this "Overfilled" warning at least three times, but granted this three times is actually out of the fifteen or twenty times when it showed "OK", over this past week of ownership.

Now that smell has gone away almost completely, but it had stayed for the first few days almost every time I drove the truck.

I am just a bit concern because this "Overfilled" is accompanied with the good old "Refer to Handbook" message, and when I go to Handbook, this is what it says under the oil lever section (page 220):

"If the message Engine Oil Level Overfilled is displayed, seek qualified assistance immediately. Do not drive the vehicle, as this will cause serious damage to the engine."

Has anyone encountered this smell/message in the past?

Is it something negligible or something to be worried about?

I am planning to take the vehicle to Service tomorrow to have it looked at, but I'll have to drive the truck out ten or twelve miles to them as this truck is my only vehicle and means of commute.

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

If I were you, I would delete this thread and call your dealer.

Do what your manual says, stop driving and call the dealer asap. They may send a flat bed truck to your place for something like this, with a loaner on top. Overfilling an engine with oil is no joke.

Thanks guys.

Could it be that the car may not have been physically leveled on the ground when I checked the oil level? I remember, two of the three times when the Overfilled indication came on, the car was in a parking structure which I think its a tiny grade/slanted.

I already chatted with the Service Director/Manager yesterday before posting here, and bringing the vehicle to them today. He said it could have been that the level may have been ever so slightly higher than normal and when the oil is hot or if the vehicle is slightly unleveled, it may show up as Overfilled. I had never mentioned to him anything about the parking structure etc.

Also, he also said that he could accurately check the oil level at the shop using his equipment just to be sure. He never mentioned anything about being cautious or flatbed towing, etc. So, I am gonna call him again today and confirm that I could drive out there without causing any harm.

A bit ****** at this whole thing, but don't want to upset the dealership either. Former Service Director who I had an excellent relationship with has just left and this person is new, so I have to make sure to have a good relationship with the new director/manager.

The sensors have enough tolerance that a slight incline shouldn't trigger that message, but if the oil sump was filled to max capacity and the oil was warm and the car was on an incline, I guess it may be possible. Better to let them check it out asap, just in case.

Service Manager looked at the vehicle yesterday. Basically he checked the oil level the same way we do right in front of me thru the in dash Service Menu. But he did it slightly differently. He told me that there was a way you could the check exact accurate level (and only technicians know about it) via the same Service Menu.

Basically he fully opened the hood, left the driver side door open, and then when into the Service Menu, selected Oil Level check option and once the oil level screen/graph showed up, he pressed the cancel button twice. This, he told me, would give you exact reading of the oil level. And it showed OK then.

So, I guess its all ok. He said that the smell I was smelling could have been from the catalytic converter if the vehicle was parked for a few days or for a couple of weeks at the dealership.

That smell had almost gone away but I noticed it again (but not to that extent) as I reached home last night.

I'll just keep an eye on the Oil Level thing.

When we took delivery of my wife's RR Evoque it also had a slight burning oil or hot smell to it. I felt it was just due to all the components heating up and breaking in. It only had 6 miles on it and I drove it home six hours. It went away after awhile and has not returned like that new car smell.
