This likely won't be interesting to anybody but me. The lighting isn't even good... BUT, I was parking yesterday, saw a new Discovery, and had to park next to it to take some comparison pictures.

I have to say, I still like the LR4 more, but I do think if they just kept with the same basic body but maybe rounded off that top rear corner of the LR4 they would have not alienated so many of us! But I'm preaching to the choir, here.

In any case, side by side pics below. I'm at normal height. Was surprised how much taller the LR4 is.

I have to say, the new Discovery wasn't even attention grabbing in the lot. Very plain looking car. You see an X5 or a Q7 and it stands out. I would have passed right by this had I not known what it was, and even so I had to double check to make sure it wasn't a Disco Sport. I'm sure folks will find ways to toughen these up a bit with nice racks, sliders and such, but this stock one was quite bland looking.

Yesterday, as I drove slowly by the local Land Rover dealer here in Southampton, NY and saw the latest offerings, most on artfully created rock piles, I only felt sadness as I know this 2013 LR4 will be my last Land Rover. As the line becomes more and more "aerodynamic" (why??) the traditional box shape that most of us love has been replaced by what looks to me more like an ..... egg. Ford's genius began diluting the brand (Freelander!) and while I'm at it, why must the Evoque be called a Range Rover when its anything but. IMO, its been one mistake after another. I've owned nothing but Land Rover's for 23 years, 3 Ranger Rovers and now (my favorite) an LR4. Yup ... only sadness.

I don't think that is a new D5 as the licence plate is properly centered on the liftback tailgate.

Still think the D5 looks like a Durango out in town. Same lines but more flare.

And there is the underlying issue - it can be mistaken for so many more “pedestrian” vehicles. There was no mistaking all prior Discos as anything but a Land Rover.

I love that my LR is so easy to find in parking lots. My roof and rack always pop up against the surrounding vehicles.

All of my neighbors and people around town know me, because you wont find a rig like mine anywhere else in the area (like... Iowa)... But I feel bad because they drive around in soul suckingly common and boring vehicles that you literally see every 30 seconds on the road. It is always too late to wave by the time I identify them. I have to resort to memorizing license plates.
