As the title suggests, I have an 2005 LR3, and the key fob just died - must be the battery finally wearing out. However, what's the best way to go about replacing the battery or getting a new fob (without spending $400 at the dealer, of course)?

Any insights, YouTube tutorials, links to quality vendors are all appreciated!

You need to purchase the replacement empty key fob from ebay, then the batteries also on ebay.
You literally cut the original fob down the sides (its glued together) being careful to not go too deep. Once apart remove small PC board and unsolder the old battery and solder in a new one. Replace PC board in the new fob, click together and you are good to go, no need to glue.
Don't forget to tension the key spring as you put it back together.
Total cost in Australia was $8 for two batteries and $10 for two LR key fobs

If you have the GAP tool, getting a whole FOB replacement is a better option.

I bought a new case off eBay and a battery off amazon. Opened up the original and reused the blade and guts in the new shell. My biggest snag was I didn’t pay attention to how many turns the blade had in the original remote. It was a huge deal, I had to pop it back apart a few times to get that right.

You were able to get the new transponder/remote programmed with the GAP? I keep reading conflicting info about programming eBay keys with the GAP tool. Some say you need to get the transponder from Land Rover so it’s within a certain “range”, for lack of a better term, for your VIN. I bought one for a spare and need to get the blade cut, but I’ve kind of been dragging my feet because of some of the posts I’ve read. Some of those posts are pretty old and the capabilities of the GAP tool may have changed.

I have the GAP BlueTooth tool. The instruction is straight forward, following the screen from my phone. I got the FOB from US reseller on eBay. Zero issue with the reprogramming. Also took the extra time to disable to Nav/GPS motion lock :)

Could you share the seller's name?
If true that this is successful, it is ground-breaking.
