Checking Transmission Oil Level

I think I have a good understanding of how to check to level via the FILL PLUG located on the gear box.

My question is should I check this level while the engine is running or not.

What model do you have?

It is not quite that simple on the LR2, as the fill and drain plug are the same thing.

However, to just answer the question, transmission fluid on all LRs should be checked while running.

Thanks for taking the time to respond to me. I have a 2009 LR2 HSE, with ~75,000 miles.

I am checking the fluid level, because I can hear a reave sound (as RPM goes up, so does the RPM reave sound). The car does not have issues as it goes through its automatic gear shifting. No slipping is occurring. No grinding sound.

My understanding was that the "drain plug" (Allen head type) was located on the bottom of the gear box pan, and that the "fill plug" (hex head type) was located on the side of the gear box. I have not been able to get the time to crawl under the vehicle and actually see.

My goal is to buy (from Napa) the gear oil specific for Land Rover LR2 HSE 2009, warm the car (10minutes), leave engine running, unscrew "fill plug", and stick my finger in the hole trying to feel for the fluid level. If low, fill. If it weeps, then to just re-tighten.

Does this Work Instruction sound like disaster?

I appoligize, I misspoke, the fill is located on the top of the trans, under the air cleaner box, but the drain and level check are the same thing. To check, you remove just the center, to drain, you remove the tube that the center goes into.

The way to top off the fluid is to overfill it by ~ 0.5 qts, then start it, let the fluid reach 60* C (about 10 minutes of running should do the trick) then remove the center of the drain plug, fluid will run out, and when it starts to reach a trickle, refit the plug.

Your noise doesn't sound like it is from the trans, and really, this trans has been very good over the years. This engine is known to have a bit of a whine to it. I would start by checking the other fluids first, mainly power steering.

Is the noise something new?

I got a 08 lr2 i have a transmission leak i was told but i cant check due to a sealed transmission. I took it to meineke and no help. Any ideas?
