I know this has been asked before, but which oil to use in the LR4 2016 model?

Most here use Mobil 1 Extended Performance as we have reasoned that it's rated to meet the Land Rover factory spec.

Most here have also decided that Land Rover's recommended oil change interval is insane and that a 7,500 interval is more appropriate.

I have used regular Mobil 1 with a 5000 mile change interval and Mobil 1 Extended Performance with a 7500 mile change interval. May also try Penzoil Platinum since it is supposedly better than Mobil 1 in a study I read.

I have a '13 V8 which to my understanding is the same engine as the '16 except with all 8 cylinders operating. After some suspicious rattling in my last LR4, I decided to go by the book on oil (Castrol Edge Professional, a PITA to source) and change at 5K mile intervals in my '13. I used Mobil 1 for most of my changes in the '11, but I'm not suggesting a correlation between that and the rattling (possible timing chain issue) in that vehicle.

Bottom line, in my experience any of the quality oils mentioned so far have performed well anecdotally. The one thing we agree on here is that we ignore the lengthy factory-suggested intervals. 5K - 7.5K is best.

I'm guessing a lot of good synthetic oils would work fine (my local LR dealer parts department told me to use just any synthetic), but Mobil 1 EP is the only one that paid to have the official certification. When my CPO warranty runs out this December I may switch to something else, but for now it's what I use.

Correct oil usage for the LR4 2016 model? Thanks for being patient. Still a lot to learn.

SAE 0W-20 STJLR.51.5122 is the correct grade and spec for your engine. There are only a few oils that meet this spec....

Castrol Professional Edge E 0w20
Fuchs Titan GT1 EVO 0w20
There is one other but can't remember.

My 16' is under warranty and I use the correct oil and document it just in case.

Am I going to switch to Mobil 1 0w20 after warranty? You bet, but not till then.

there absolutely no reason to change synthetic every 5 to 7k miles of normal driving. the weak link in the system is the oil filter and it's not 1970 anymore...today's filters can go 15k miles easy.

I respectively disagree. With DI engines fuel contamination is an increased risk. Once my vehicle came off warranty I quit doing the yearly changes and went to oil/filter spring and oil swap in fall. I don't use an extended change oil using this system. Currently I am using PP Ultra 5W-20. Why only a yearly filter change? Well I cut a few apart and there was almost nothing trapped in it after a year. An old filter doesn't lose it's ability to filter, just lose it's efficiency if it plugs up. Danger is it going to bypass but as was said earlier..This is not 1970.

In my opinion it is better to have clean oil coming through the pcv syatem. With the DI setup there is no fuel washing on the backs of the intake valves anymore. Dirty oil = deposits. At least that is my theory. The local Rover specialists idea is that the timing chain tensioners are forced outward but oil pressure. There are some ultra small jets behind the tensioners that force them outward. If these plug then the tensioner does not move out and there is chain slap. Just a theory like them all lol.

FWIW I put about 12k miles yearly on this thing so about 6k between oil changes.

I've never done more than 7500 miles/year on my 2013 LR4, so a yearly oil change was enough. During the warranty period I stayed with the OEM Castrol, and after I went with Mobil1 EP. I did a baseline oil analysis when removing the last of the Castrol oil. I'll have it done again when the Mobil1 EP comes off in a couple of months. I'll be able to compare then. They both will have been done with about 5k miles of driving. My car is at 31.5k miles now.

I have never gone more than 7500 miles on any car (using synthetic oil) without an oil change. BMW's had 15k mile intervals and Porsche even had 20k mile intervals for a while. That's crazy.
