Don't forget that some oil manufacturers will use terminology like "meets or exceeds", or "recommended for", a particular certification. This is NOT always the same as the oil being formally approved by JLR, if that is what you are looking for.

As discussed in the multiple other oil threads on this forum, most any full-synthetic of the correct viscosity (5W-20 for the V8, not 0W-20) should be fine if changed by 5k-7.5k miles under normal service.

Land Rover Website States--- "Exclusively Recommended"--- Recommended does not equal REQUIRED.
I did not see in my LR4 Owners manual the wording Castrol Edge Professional "Required". Recommended is right up there with "Nothing lasts longer"--- great marketing words.

Recommended / Approved for use words between automakers and oil companies are usually the result of marketing $$$ transfering between the 2. I have yet to ever seen one come out and say---Xyz Oil manufactured "Exclusively" for Automaker Brand X.

I am new to the LRWorld but this "oil" topic is not unique to Land Rover---- Castrol Edge Professional (and Oil in general) has been similar topic on many other boards: Castrol Edge PRo for VW and Audi.....Every oil is the best or you never want to use "that oil"--- Run the list-- Castrol , Mobil 1, Penzoil, Royal Purple, Amsoil, Pentosin, Liquid Moly and countless others.

The Pro Series is the addition of a dye added. Primarily to aid auto shops to find leaks. Given the track record of Land Rover vehicles having a very poor reliability and high cost of ownership, I am sure having an oil that has a UV dye added to help mechanics find out where your engine is leaking makes great sense.

If this 0w-20 oil was so special and unique to Land Rover they would have it packaged as under their own name and stated so.

I went through this oil topic stuff years ago on my VW Passat w 1.8 Turbo engine--- 100's of opinions...all had oil testings...all had data on Group 3 vs Group 4 Base stocks etc etc.
You will go round and round like trying to find a quarter in the corner of a round room.

Went to our local LR dealer to buy oil. Nope...now we only sell it by the drum or in an oil change. Went down the road to the Jag dealer. Sure we do.....$3 less per quart and filter about 2/3 the price.

Yup. And at the end of the day, steady and frequent oil changes (way before the LR recommended 15k mile interval) are probably the best bet for engine longevity, provided you're using some kind of decent 5w-20 oil that meets the brand's specs.

I'm no oil expert, but I read that on a Ford forum. For what is worth, Mobil 1 advanced Synthetic also meets both 925A and 945A:

Meets or exceeds: API SN, SN RESOURCE CONSERVING, SM, SM Energy Conserving, SL, SJ; ILSAC GF-4, GF-5; ACEA A1/B1; Ford WSS-M2C925-A, FORD WSS-M2C945-A, WSS-M2C930-A; Chrysler MS-6395.

Recommended by ExxonMobil for applications that require: API CF; ILSAC GF-4, GF-3; GM 6049M.

So the only difference is probably the UV dye they put in the Castrol to help them void your warranty if you go with another oil manufacturer?
Source?
When I was going through Bitog, Jag sites and the posts/threads here I mostly ran into old posts referencing WSS-M2C925-A but when looking at current manufacturer sites the references in the product spec sheets were gone.
I find a lot of products meeting the spec being sold in Europe and not here in the US at all or at humorous prices online.

For the same price as Mobil 1 at Costco there's Liqui Moly2259 Special Tec AA 5w20 which has 925-A written on it but only with "Recommended for" I think someone on Bitgo said it glows too. It's on Amazon and at NAPA stores but they had to order it near me.
Liqui Moly actually makes a 5w20 with a Land Rover designation in the name that has the actual 925-A spec approval but I can't find it anywhere but Europe. Only place I found that ships to the US only sold barrels.

Red Line lists the 925-A on their spec sheet with a "Recommended for..." https://www.redlineoil.com/Content/files/tech/5W20_MO_PROD_INFO.pdf

I'm trying Red Line this time around just to see if the Jag V8 gets any benefit. Hadn't read where anyone else had. Still cheaper than Castrol Professional Gold on eBay for $15 a qt.

Red Line is my second choice, if my local JLR dealership ever stops selling bulk oil over the counter (I bring in gallon jugs, they fill 'em from their 55-gallon barrel). I use Red Line in all my other vehicles.

In one of the other oil threads on this forum I went into a lot of detail about what oils I found meeting the proper WSS-M2C925-A spec, and also noted how many oils did not. I was never able to find any confirmation that the newer specs (945, etc) superceded the original, I only saw unsubstantiated opinions that basically implied the number higher sequentially, therefore it must be better. I still don't know what makes the 925-A spec so rare/special. Or why so few oil mfr's bother offering it.

EDIT: Found my old post, click here. Also skip forward in that thread to post #183, #188, #197, and #200. Minor update is that since then, I've backed off my stance on M-1 EP, and feel it's probably fine if changed by the ~7.5k interval spec'd in Europe. Ditto for most other full-synthetic 5W-20 that claims "suitable for WSS-M2C925-A". Forum won't let me edit an old post so I can't update it.

I have no idea what the previous owner fed my MY13 before I got it last fall, but I have only used Castrol from the dealer since I bought it (2 drains so far). However, I have 9 qts of fresh Mobil 1 on my garage shelf and I think I'll switch things up this next change just to use up that inventory before going back to Castrol. Shouldn't create any issues, should it?

What type of Mobil 1 and what mileage interval do you run on oil changes?

I switched to using a standard quality synthetic and changing the oil/filter in spring and just the oil in the fall. Typically 5-6k miles between oil changes. Currently running Pennzoil Platinum Ultra 5W-20.
