Sunday- leaving on vacation and LR4 won’t start- cycles through many test.. gages all crazy etc.

Replaced battery as the voltage showed 8.2 on Gap Tool.

All worked fine to get us to location 2 hour drive towing a trailer.

Now doing to checks with Gap Tool - Voltage is never above 13.2 (all very slow campground driving) I always though I was about 14v before

Is this normal- I did put the battery on a charger as it may just need a good really charge anyways?

I did do the battery reset have no update the type of battery yet using Gap

Thoughts of being normal or am I on my way to a alternator change?

You probably did the same searches as me... yes, for a fully charged battery with the engine running it should be between 13.7 and 14.7 volts. At rest it can be 12.6 when fully charged, but never below 12V.

That said, I haven't checked my battery when running and with the LR, I wouldn't be surprised if there are so many things drawing on the battery that it runs closer to 13.2. Heck, they don't even trust us to run the stereo for more than a few minutes with the engine off! The darn car draws a lot of current.

I'd just keep your eye on it. Could be your alternator providing an insufficient charge... just enough, but not high as it should be. Also, obviously check you battery contacts and make sure you have a good metal to metal connection, without a lot of corrosion between the inside of the nuts and the posts.

Does anyone know if there is a technician code for the infoscreen to show us battery voltage? There used to be for the LR3s, but I've never searched for one on the LR4. They'd be an easy way to keep tabs on things during your trip.

Watch this at 1:26. Voltage shows up on upper right hand corner.

If I drive with my Gap Tool plugged in the voltage appears on the monocrome screen between the gauges.

Update I made it back no issues from vacation, I am still seeing via the GAP Tool about 13.0-13.2 usually, sometimes peak at 14 on startup and back down to 13.2 in 10-15 seconds.

Also checked with Voltage Meter and get about the same. Seems low to me... as I think I was always up around 14.0 with the previous battery. is that because the battery was going and needed more charge.

If anybody else can confirm their charge level would appreciate it.

I want to say I see 13.4 to 13.8 normally but will take notice and send an update on the way home.

Our charging system is computer controlled and not as simple as things used to be. It only charges when it believes it needs to for the sake of saving drag on the engine, thus boosting fuel economy by a fraction of a mpg. As such you'll see battery voltage in the 12-13v range instead of the 14-15v range most are accustomed to in other vehicles while they're running. It unfortunately results in very short battery life and doesn't really help mpg much at all.

I'm assuming the justification for 2-3 year battery life is "this should be expected with such a heavy vehicle that rides so well," since that's what every other flaw of these vehicles gets excused for.

Thanks all for the help. I will continue to monitor but seems that what I am experiencing is correct.

I also have not updated the battery type via Gap Tool and will do that also. Since the computer may need the details to correctly adjust the charging required.
