So if a locking rear differential goes out... is it a completely different installation than if I wanted one installed on my 2012 HSE? What makes it not practical lets say years down the line when things fall apart? Haven’t got the repair manual yet as I’m under warranty for the next two years.

Uh, mine already has all the computers setup properly, the wire harnesses, etc... It isn't just a diff pumpkin. It is an entire network of crap to make it work.

I bought a 2015 LR4 and besides $4,000 in immediate repairs and the odd warning light coming on for a day then going off, it’s been great. People I meet have said they have car envy.
Unfortunately I bought it at a shady dealership, which explains the missing lug nut, leaking transmission, work brakes and improperly installed wheel. So, if you’re in the Boston area, don’t buy from BidCars. Do contact Alpha Cars in Boxborough. Dimitri and his team are awesome and will find you what you’re looking for, then ship it to you.

I almost bought the 2011 that alpha cars has for sale, it had the vision and hd package I think.

The way I found the one I ended up buying was setting up a filter on CarGurus and waiting a few days. A new one or two would pop up ever day.

In terms of finding a ‘nice’ one, you should really be looking for cars that were traded into a dealership. If a dealer takes in a car on trade, and it is in good condition, they will list it for sale. If it’s leaking fluids, has bigger things wrong with it, they throw it to auction. Then a smaller dealership will pick it up and try to sell it. I found my recently purchased 2012 at a Volvo dealership, just in on trade.

In terms of finding the HD and LUX packages, you’re going to have a hard time finding exactly what you want from a used car. If you find a car pop up online with both of those, you are going to be so wrapped up in wanted to buy it for those packages that you are going to overlook the other details that you should worry about (condition, etc).

Maybe they downgraded the grille to the prior spec... ;)

LOL!

Call me crazy but there have been more than a few times when I've fantasized about keeping all of the 2013 tech (such as it is) and interior finishes I've got but making the exterior trim look like an LR3... I like the LR4 but I *really* like the more austere and serious look of the LR3.

Trust me, you want the painted fender flares that are easy to wax. Trying to keep the LR3's black plastic from fading was a full time job. Lots of 303 protectant and an annual painting using Mother's back-to-black plastic restorer.

I too prefered my LR3 for: 1) the exterior looks (esp grill and tail lights), cup holders, headlight output. Everything else I like the LR4 better.
