Now I know where the Land Rover / Range Rover confusion comes from

Ever have to explain to someone that Land Rover is the company name and Range Rover is a model name? Just received this pop-up ad:

They must be getting pretty desperate to move those Discos collecting dust on dealer's lots. ;)

There is a factory applied aluminum Range Rover badge above the upper glove box of my 2013 LR4. Caused lots of chuckles at the dealership when I bought the car, everyone had missed it at initial inspection until I pointed it out when I picked it up.

I always just dumb it down to "Think of it like Ford to Lincoln or GM to Cadillac." Land Rover is the all around name, RR is just the expensive brand name.

Yep... I haven't come up with a true, simple example of how to explain the relationship to novices. Depending on the situation, person or time allowed for the conversation; when someone says nice "Range Rover," I either smile and say thanks or try and explain.

Ford/Lincoln, GM/Caddy isn't an accurate example(if anyone would even care...). I usually say "Land Rover is the brand, a Range Rover is a model of a Land Rover, there just happens to be 4 versions/models of Range Rovers and 2 versions of Discovery's(at the moment) built by Land Rover."

I do like the idea of just saying, nope, the Range Rover is $30k more. But usually that just leaves a confused face...

I use an analogy when people refer to my LR4 as a Range Rover to illustrate the relationship.

Range Rover is to Land Rover as a 7 Series is to BMW. Seems that sets off the light bulb for most...
