ktm525 Thank you

No problem. If you have the ability to jiggle your travel days a bit you can avoid most bad situations. A new all season like the Defender M/S is not bad in snow for the first few years of use and it will not be a mushy gumball in the Florida heat.

FYI Simpletire.com is doing a sale on Nokians until October 4th. I just got a set of WRG3's delivered to a local shop for $705.00. I'll have to pay to get them installed but I'm still way ahead of buying them locally.

That's a good deal on the Nokians, thanks for the tip. Even at their regular price this place is lower than what I've seen elsewhere.

I am a big fan of Nokian's tires and have used the following: WRG3 (LR4), Rotiiva (LR3), and R2 (BMW M3). I've been impressed all around with their performance, each with different attributes. One area where the SUV tires suffer a little is ice, which can get a little unnerving during mountain trips, esp at night. We live in Colorado and drive up to go skiing most weekends, and during storms the conditions can get about as bad as you imagine - packed snow, ice, steep grades, rough roads, etc. I haven't tried a more aggressive tire like the R2 (now R3) on an SUV, but recall from five winters on the M3 they are very soft, which hinders dry braking and handling. Just looking for the extra little bit of grip in icy conditions in the mountains. Anybody here with similar experience car to share how soft the R3 SUV is for a truck like the LR platform? Considering the WRG4 (the new gen) and the tread pattern looks even more dry road oriented which is one of the reasons why I am considering the R.

Yeah up to about 20" now. The only upside is the new Blizzak DM-V2s are quite good.

So you and I drive the same weather. I go to Winthrop area at least once a month and to the passes to xc ski 2-3x / wk (Stevens, Snoqualmie, & White Pass on hwy 12). I have had decent experience on the Michelin LTX winter version too. It's not like the insane Nokian lt2 but it'll last a ton of miles and hold up better to those odd days that it can be in the 40's most of the way while also snowing at the passes.

However, I also tend to choose the vehicle per the weather. The bmw has pure winter nokian r2 on all winter and the lr3 swaps around between the studded nokian lt2 and the michelin ltx winter. All my lr3 tires are E load range FYI.

I use 105 torque
