When you place your order online at the above web site, you are supposed to enter your VIN before placing the order, so it can be validated (and the required activation code generated.) If the update doesn't apply to you, in theory the system should be smart enough to let you know.

For any and all who miss or prefer the British accent found on the older LR/RR vehicles through their navigation I have found a way to enable it. While browsing the data files I found that they are all there just not enabled. If you set your navigation and cluster for GB/UK then perform a map update the voice files loaded will be the British not the standard robotic NAR voice. The only "downside" is spelling is in the traditional UK format. For example initializing would be "initialising" and so forth but small trade-off for the smoother and nicer guidance voice over.

Sweet! Any idea when they next update will be released? Or how long this one has been out?

This stuff drives me nuts about factory systems. There's no reason that it should cost that much to update it...you'd think they'd want to give it away for the sake of owner loyalty.

They know they're getting killed by superior, self-updating, FREE smartphone alternatives so they're milking it for all it's worth, I guess.

Why doesn't MSFT and AAPL give away their software for free? There are many businesses that do this and others that make it part of the ownership. On my E63 I have "three free updates" but I am sure it is baked into the price of the vehicle. On my X5M I have free map updates OTR through BMW and their system but both used to charge for updates. I believe the most expensive was Audi when I wanted an update it was $399 for the software and $2hrs labor for it to sit in a bay connected to GeKo network to update. They wound up doing it as a courtesy and did not charge but I felt that was absurd to even ask that amount.

Well, if you think about it they give you updates for free. When is the last time you had to pay for an iOS update? As long as you aren't changing "versions" of MSFT it's free to get updates as well. I understand they'd want payment for a whole new "device" but updating the existing should be included. This is why you'll see my common statements of just using my phone as the central system and BT for audio integration.

On a desktop or laptop you're buying the software and the license and now you pay a yearly fee for the use of it to get the updates but either way this has been a debate or issue of concern for many regarding navigation and the costs associated with me. For me updates are important and I get them whenever available. I see it as a maintenance item part of the vehicle.
