Does LR3 front cv axle diff seal need to be greased?

Can someone tell if this seal needs to be greased? I removed the old one and it looked like it was packed with grease, though it could have been sludge as my oil was very dirty. If it needs to be greased, what kind should I use?

Your best answer would be to stop by a LR dealership and ask making a presence, that way usually seems to get you better answers vs just calling up dealerships.
Heck later call several others and see if you get the same answer.
Seals in general should all be lubricated as dry they would get hot and wear away otherwise.

Do you have a part number so I know we're talking about the same thing? I just replaced my front half axle. The oil seal isn't something that has to be greased like you would the u-joint on a D2 driveshaft, for example. If you had sludge on yours then my guess is you had REALLY old gear oil in your diff? LR says to change the fluid every 75K miles but tribal wisdom is to change it 25K.

Yes they should be greased. Attached is the front halfshaft section of the LR3 shop manual. Here are the left and right side manuals as well.

I do not know anything about greasing the front CV axle seals as in over 300,000km, have never done such, but I do know that the front differential vent should vent, or there will be differential oil leaking.

The link below contains a few files, some of which have had over a thousand views, showing how to replace the front differential vent. I might note that I installed the new vent prior to having a leak but the one I removed, sure seemed plugged or near plugged.

It must be the only clean hands standup job costing less than fifty dollars that I have ever done on my 3.

It is easier to do than replacing a xenon headlight bulb.

I wouldn't view greasing those birfield joints as a regular maintenance item, I would think they would only need attention if the rubber gaiter is compromised. My point to johndvd is that yes there should be grease in that gaiter. As for what type of grease, the LR manual specifies "the grease that comes with the replacement kit". LR has a grease for the Disco II front swivel hubs or whatever they're called that comes in a big tube like ketchup at McDonalds but I would think any NLGI grade 1 or 2 would be fine. Google swivel hub grease.

You're right mflecklr3, we are talking about different parts if that seal is what johdvd is talking about, my apology, I thought he was talking about the Birfield joints that are under the rubber pleated gaiters on the drive axles, not the seal at the diff. Thanks for clarifying.
