Remember that you can't even engage Low Range on-the-fly (vehicle rolling / not stationary) if you are exceeding speeds of about 24 mph, and vice-versa you can not shift from low to high range if you are moving faster than 38 mph, you gotta slow down first.

Didnt know that you could actually shift to the low range while still moving. I thought I had read it in the handbook (either LR3' or 4's) a while back that in order to shift to low you had to come to a complete stop, shift the transmission to Neutral, select low range and then put the transmission back in D mode, and the same sequence of events in reverse for going back to the normal High range mode. So I have always followed the above procedure for going in and out of low range.

I think it’s roughly 5 mph or so. Almost stopped works fine too. Fully stopped does work as well. Best to Er on safe side imo

You can shift to low range while moving (24 mph / 40 kmh or less): temporarily shift to N, push and hold the Lo Range button for a second, and when the Lo / mountain icon stops flashing and remains lit steady in the instrument cluster, shift back to Drive.

If you try that trick at higher speeds, no harm done as basically nothing happens: the Low Range icon flashes for a few seconds (I believe a message prompting you to slow down also pops up briefly), and you stay in high range.

My 2006 Sport had the same "feature", pretty sure it was always detailed in the manual's gearbox section, although most people prefer to stop before switching range since rolling in Neutral and pushing buttons when you are off roading is not the safest thing you can do. :)

Unfortunately my 2016.5 LR4 HSE Silver does not have the HD package either. To get the one I wanted (Santorini black, black interior, black package) I had to give up the HD package and tow packages. It was a very rare / difficult vehicle to find at this juncture (purchased in august).

That being said, I've had great success with it thus far. The truck is still more than capable (moreso than most anything else otu there), especially with some good tires, and it should satisfy most casual off-roaders needs. There are a number of steps you can take to compensate for lack of low range gears. For example, for steep descents you put the truck in sport, paddle shift into S1 for engine breaking, and use HDC. Works like a charm. I haven't managed to get mine stuck yet. I plan to put it to the test here soon. I'll post some pics and a recap and let you know how well it runs through the paces.

If you're looking at extreme rock crawling or heavy mud ruts on a regular basis, there is no substitute for HD package though. And if you're thinking maybe you can get the HD package retrofitted after purchase, you can't. Not without $10k+ investment. It has to be fitted at the factory.
Shame can't be easily retrofitted.
