Just for reference I might be a little jaded on the topic as I used "10k" oil in my 1999 intrepid. The oil sludged and caused the guides to wear and basically blew up the engine. Since then I tend to be a little gun-shy on oil changes. A trusted mechanic told me once that if you're in it for the long game don't mess with regular maintenance and always do the oil/fluids before mfg recommended as they're not in it for the long game. They're in it to sell you another vehicle. (Hence why they have service centers connected to showrooms)

I am doing 8k kms (5k miles) on the oil and the filter gets done every second time. 105k miles and timing chain/tensioners as quiet as a church mouse.

The people that don't do a yearly or more often than 15k are probably the same ones that don't use Top Tier gas. Sure it costs a few more $ but you own a luxury offroader. Crack your wallet open or dump it to somebody that will.

Neighbor just spent $2K to replace a bank of fuel injectors in their LR4 with 70K miles. I asked her if she uses top tier gas like Mobil or Shell and she replied that she just puts any gas in it, not even premium. I know the the cost of top tier gas isn't the issue, it's just not important to her.

What made you decide to change the filter every other change?

1) We are only putting 16k kms per year on it (10 k miles)

2) I cut a few filters apart after a year and they had very little contaminants. The filter basically looked new, with filertration not compromised at all.

A simple top side oil swap takes me about 10 minutes max including tidying up.
