Hello guys, Just signed up today, as I thought this would be a good forum to get some help, I'm looking to buy 2016 LR4, just fell in love by taking a random test drive about 4 months earlier at land rover dealer, went there to look at the velar and the RRS to lease (big range rover out of my budget) but just out of the blue while waiting for a sales man to finish a used 2016 base was standing right next to me. Looking at it, it was something i always admired the timeless design but i thought it was rugged rough off road machine a la jeep wrangler, but this was the first time looking at in person before it was from a far passing up on the freeway or my earliest memories of the disco 2 when i was younger. Door was unlocked so i just thought to check it out, first thing i noticed right away the ergonomics, so easy to get inside and sit, seating position perfect and visibility. My salesman approached me,

I stepped out to inform my interest in the velar and rrs. So i take those two for a test drive, not bad but compared to the the LR4 i just sat in they were tight on the inside and the seating and overall space felt tight, they drove alright but my mind kept wandering back to the LR4 i just saw. In my curiosity i told the salesman
let me take that LR4 sitting there out for a spin as well. And all I can say is WOW!!!, it was a good 2 levels above the velar and rrs in refinement and driving. Biggest this was the quietness and ride, felt like i was in s class, the charm in its simple looks and just overall package changed my whole plans. Long story short, left the dealer to find everything i could about this thing, and find good used one on the market. I have pretty much narrowed it down to wanting 2016 with lowest miles within my budget as i plan to keep it long time. My question to you guys is there anything i should look for or avoid in this model year, also I'm in northern california, is there any reps or people you can recommend in other states that could possibly help me out by looking or test driving one for me or some indy shops i can hire to test drive and inspect , as my search is nationwide but have narrowed it down quite a bit, looking to buy in the coming days.

I just picked up a 16 LR4 HSE HD package and love it. Try to fine one certified pre owned and negotiate them adding more time to the warranty if possible. I had an lr3 and a RR sport prior and had great luck with both of them. Fine the service history and make sure to stay current on service.

It’s the last model year so the teething issues were long ago worked out. The SC6 works very well with the 8 spd IMO, even though it was hard for me to swallow not having a V8.

The factory running boards for 16 are actually part of the side impact collision system so dealers aren’t allowed to take them off, in case you’re someone who will want to modify or off-road with yours.

I just bought a 15 LUX with HD for wife, great truck. I was worried I would not like the SCV6 over the V8, but it's actually perfect. The last thing in my mind is trying to drive fast in a box. I had no idea the RB's are part of the side-impact, interesting.

Keep in mind there were no structural changes after '15, when the running boards became standard. The doors have to meet federal side impact standards, which they do, and the integrated-body-frame is arguably stronger than most passenger vehicles on the road today. I recently had my independent body shop replace them with Proud Rhino sliders (mfg and sold by Lucky8 LLC) and imo they look much better. I probably wouldn't go through the trouble of removing and not replacing them with anything else, but would not feel like it was "unsafe" by doing so either.

Great summary, and that's how many of us LR4 owners feel about our vehicles. Good luck with your search.

If you plan on doing any moderate off-road driving, the "HD package" is a near-must, as it includes both a 2-speed, low-range center differential and a rear axle locker. '13 and older models all had the 2-speed center diff and the HD package was just the rear axle locker, but starting in '14 the center diff became part of the HD package.

Insightful post. Of course I have the running boards on my 2016 as well. They do come in handy for my wife and mother that like to use the side steps (yes, they even use it when I drop the LR4 to access height). But I really don't care for the look as much as sliders. Maybe one day I'll change them out. In the meantime I'll just file away your recommendation. Care to share any other photos of the sliders on your truck?

Not trying to steal, but how do I know if I have the HD? I have a '13 LUX. It was a lease vehicle out of California.

Here you go....I really liked the overall look with the Duratracs but I recently swapped them (they were worn and loud) for Nokian WRG3 which is better for my mostly-on-road and snow use. They just don't look as good. These pics don't show the non-skid tape I applied to a few strategic areas on top of the tubes; my wife and kids insisted!
