I'm in Thunder Bay, ON. Closest would be Winnipeg I'm guessing.

Twin cities roughly 6 hrs so wow that's a haul. I'm from Grand Marais... ;)

Honestly, in your area....I'd get a Toyota Land Cruiser or Lexus lx 570. I am a multi-vehicle owning, 20 year, Land Rover lover so there ya go. LC 200 series very nice and also very good value for the early years 2008-2013.

Alan,
I am in Toronto and bought my 2010 LR4 HSE 12 months ago, 105k km when I bought it and engine had been replaced under warranty by LR.
At the time I chatted it over with my mechanic (who had also owned a 2010 from new). His advice was 2010 or 2011 was the sweetspot as after that the electronics got overly complicated = $$$ to repair. He also said budget a minimum of $1k every time you take it in for repair.

I am pretty happy with mine, although, as I knew, the gas mileage is atrocious. If you are driving it 10-15 mins to work it will have barely warmed up. Not great for any vehicle, especially in winter.

I would go for the lowest mileage / most dealer service records example that you can find thats in your budget (obvious advice). Over 12 months of ownership / 10k km I have replaced the battery and all four brake rotors and pads. Lower controls arms are a regular replacement item = $$. Would look for one that has had that done recently. You can budget in $2k for winter tires and rims too. Four wheel drive gets you going in slippery conditions, but 3 tons of Coventry's finest takes some stopping, so you need all the winter grip you can get.
Good luck!

Ditto on a '13 LR4.
I can't say anything better than what's already been said.
Except go with the HSE Lux.
Be patient and find the one fits your needs best.

Good Hunting!

I just got my first LR4, a 2013 that(unexpectedly) turns out to have the HD package! 3 weeks into owning it, I am very happy with it.

You people with not only one dealer, but several withing easy distance aren't getting the main concern here. Thunder Bay is no where near a dealer and in areas like that there are also slim choices for truly competent independent shops. I would not buy a Land Rover, especially newer, without 100% capable shop in same town.

The issue is not so much that you'll need a flatbed, I never have on 4 LR vehicles over nearly 500,000 miles, but the smallest problem can turn into a massive annoyance if you're having to rely on distant support.

Best choices for someone in that region are Toyota, Ford, Subaru, etc.

I am in 100% agreement - a Land Cruiser/LX is the best choice for someone that wants a capable overland vehicle without the need of dealer support. Both of my LR vehicles are cool and all that, but I couldn't recommend someone buy one without warning them of support expectations that must be met. The loyalists will pretend it isn't a big deal, but it has to be considered by most normal folks. When I drove an F150 I never had to worry about getting to work. When my wife drove a Jeep Commander I only kind of worried about her getting to work. Since we've both been driving Land Rover vehicles (me LR4 her RRS) we've had a few occasions where vehicles were out of commission and caused disruption in normal life. No ******* way I'd rely on one of these without a support network nearby, and even with one nearby its just a choice of love over logic.
