I have a 2016 LR4 which is making the same engine noise. I also live in Colorado. Much worse now that it has gotten colder. Dealer also said it is "normal." That it is the fuel pumps. I do not believe this is normal and the vehicle sounds awful. Wondering if we are using same dealer? I would be interested in hearing how you get resolution to this matter and / or if the problem / repair is identified.

Mine is not that loud, but cold starts make a similar, but far more subtle noise. After i changed the oil, including using the BG oil treatment first , it mostly went away. It does sound like auto adjust hydraulic lifters with low oil pressure. So if quite cold andoil dirty, it could be the issue. Have you changed the oil at the 18k mile JLR interval, and using the recommend synth oil? I use the recommended oil, but like many in the forum, i change at +/- 10k miles, or less, if lots of towinggm

Brief update. Dealer verified it’s timing chain issue after a couple of mornings seeing it under cold start. Going to check valve clearances for damage but doesn’t appear there is an issue there at this point. Also agreed to cover under warranty, thank God - sounds like rack rate is 30 hour of labor plus parts (assuming no valve damage).

Hopefully not. You’d think with all of these engines in service across JLR cars it would have popped up if a major issue but always worth checking if close to end of warranty.

Uh oh. Is this the first of a timing chain scv6 report?

I'm not sure what the timing-chain design is on the SCV6--it could very well be the same as the V8 since the V6 is the V8 with 2 cylinders rendered inoperable--but SURELY if it's the same design it would have used the updated timing chain guides that were used in the '13 V8 engines.

SA said that the tensioner was part of the issue and that part was updated at some point since my car was built (late 2014).

Quick update. The issues appears to have been one or both tensioners leaking and gradually losing pressure, allowing for more play in the chain. The guides for the LR4 with the SCV6 engine were redesigned to include a steel "button" where the tensioner hits it, so no issue with them. I had a look at what they took off my car and they looked normal, no notable wear for 40k+ miles. Sounds like the tensioner part has been updated at some point since my car was produced (late 2014) as this is becoming a more common issue. Engine sounds great now and back to normal, so grateful to LR Flatirons for taking care of it. Also had a coolant leak fixed (the y-shaped (crossover?) pipe fitting) so hopefully done with those for a while as well.

If you hear some noise, certainly as loud as what I heard as demonstrated in the video in the first post of this thread, better to check it out early. It appears only on cold start for any where from 10 seconds to a couple minutes depending on temperature in my case. I am easily bothered by unusual noises so said something early and thankfully avoided valve damage, but there was a FF RR in the shop as well that had bent some valves since it was left too long.

Good to hear they are taking care of it, and that the updated guides looked good after 40k miles.

FYI, the guides were actually updated in the '13 model year (actually, really late in the '12 model year), so the last of the V8's got the updated guides, too.
