I had this issue on my '16. Wiper would stop dead center at noon position. Dealer replaced wiper motor and wiper. Never happened again.
Pretty much what I figured from the start... and was hoping wasn't true. New motors are like $350. Plus labor and you're looking at over $500. I do (did) use that wiper all the time though. Super helpful in Seattle.

My friend's rear wiper was not working and he asked me to take a look at it. Before I did anything i popped the cap off the wiper arm and checked the nut. It was incredibly loose and probably would have fallen off if not for the cap. Once I tightened that it worked perfectly fine. This is often the case with the rear wiper and it not working properly. Second is the motor failing and from my experience I've noticed that when the wiper arm looks sluggish or is dragging the motor is on the way out. Also some people let snow pile up on the arm and use the motor to get it off this too puts a strain on it (IMO) and may lead to untimely replacement.

Great idea! I’ll pop the cap off and take a look. Fingers crossed.

I was able to located a new motor for around $200 shipped. Anyone know how much of a pain it is to swap a motor if it comes to that.

Also confirmed dealer says right around $500 to replace.

If you're handy with a trim pry tool and a socket you can get it done. It is very simple. While you're in there you may want to get some acoustic foam or felt tape to mitigate some of the rattles and squeaks that appear over time from the plastic cover or if you want to go all out then install some DynaMat.

Haven’t had a chance to check it out, but if a new motor is necessary, dynamat is an interesting thought. We had squeaks that were driving us insane when we first bought it. Adjusted both side hatch and center contact points and solved the problem. Couldn’t hurt to add some sound deadening though.

Make sure the joint on the wiper arm (that lets you pull the wiper away from the window) is properly lubricated and not crusty. If its crusty, the wiper hits a lot of resistance and slows down or stops mid-arc.
