Hello all: I currently drive a 2017 Evoque Dynamic HSE and am looking at options out there for 3rd row SUVs that aren't gigantic. I'm looking mainly at Discover Sports, the last model Audi Q7 (2015ish), and '14-'16 LR4s. I love the look of the LR4 and the 3rd row is actually somewhat decent in terms of not being limited in size to small children.

I've tried to find some sort of compendium of what happens-when in terms of mileage/age. Bushings, air suspension, rotors, that sort of thing. For example, if I buy one with 40K miles what will be the first big hit, or 60K, etc. Does such a thing exist?

Also, has anyone chipped their LR4 to get better fuel efficiency? If so, what were the results?

Thanks in advance!

At that mileage I would be looking first at brake condition, and front lower control arm condition.

If they haven't been done, the control arms are probably on their last legs.

My control arm bushings went at 66k miles. Brakes and rotors.

If you plan to do any sort of off-roading at all, get the HD package.

Don't buy an LR4 if you will fret over fuel efficiency. Plan on 15-18mpg average. Fuel economy was the absolute last concern on our list of wants/needs, even if it got 10mpg we'd still own it. Unless you drive many tens of thousands of miles annually, the extra fuel cost is not likely to be a dealbreaker. You need to do the maths and figure out the extra cost vs some other 3-row SUV that might get what, 20-22mpg...?

Sorry, can't help on the list of frequent failures... I read a lot about water pumps and front LCA bushings though. And they eat brake pads. If it's a V8 model, review the service records and make sure the oil was changed on schedule (MAX 15kmi) using factory-spec oil. If not, the infamous timing chain/tensioner job may be in your future. (Again, we like the LR4 so much, we don't care - I'll just be in pain while paying for the repair.)

If you’re looking for good gas mileage, get a Prius (my last vehicle) and enjoy 48 mpg. I bought an LR4 for the same reason as you: too many kids, won’t be caught dead in a minivan, Suburbans are ugly.
The gas is tough but it is what it is.
Btw, my kids fight over sitting in the third row, so both seats are often filled. Which means now I need to find a flexible low-profile roof rack that work for everything from suitcases to paddle boards.

On the topic of what breaks first, mine was bought used as a 2015. 3 days later it was in the shop to replace all my leaking transmission lines and replace all of my brake pads and replace the windshield side trim pegs. I’ve got a rusted and rattling heat deflector over my tail pipe that I’ll replace myself since the local specialist never gets back to me with pricing.

Not only is the LR4 a thirsty beast but she also has a taste for premium fuel. As noted previously if fuel economy is a concern look elsewhere. Chip for more power lol.

Not a LR4 owner but on my third LR3! All the above are what I have experienced as "Typical / Normal" to be anticipated "Maintenance" LR3/LR4 issues. Knowing this is part of the Land Rover "Experience. Having the benefit of the knowledge base of the members of this board has been part of my comfort level in continued ownership. Gas mileage outweighs the pleasure of owning one of these "Beasts", 4 or 3. To point NEVER RE-CHIP a Land Rover!!! As finicky as the computer system is, IT WILL CREATE OTHER ISSUES! Trust in this, TRUE! I also drive and love a Range Rover HSE. Oh almost forgot to mention, Don't Run Regular Gasoline in it without an Octane booster (In No Premium available situations). I actually had to do it in an emergency situation and it cut mileage in half and the Engine PINGED FURIOUSLY! Good Luck in your search, do yourself a favor and try finding a low mileage V8 or a Diesel. PS... Make sure you service the TRANSMISSION at 90,000... Check your manual if you buy an LR4. Same on your "Lovely" Evoque.

I am inclined to believe that there are some ponies waiting to be discovered on the SCV6 models.
