Safety Devices is the OG roof rack manufacturer for the Defender 90 and Discovery 1. All the roof racks (and snorkles) on the Camel Trophy Disco 1s were Safety Devices.

They've been around forever, but I think there were periods here and there where they were defunct, then resurrected.

I don't have any experience with this particular roof rack, but, if I was in the market, it would probably be between this one or the ProSpeed.

Thanks! It looks like a quality product.

I had a way back SD on my Disco 1 then sold it as it was super heavy and being made of steel, an ongoing rust worry. I will only use Aluminum racks now. Currently have 2 Hannibal 83"x55" with their awnings side and rear with "room" walls.

I like Rovers North but that is a seriously crap description of the rack on the website LOL. Might as well say "it's cool, buy it". Nothing about material, coating, dimensions, nothing at all.

This looks like a poor man’s version of the ProSpeed rack for more money.

Not as many mounting options, much higher profile...

Having a ProSpeed, I would not have considered this rack.

Safety Devices isn't a poor man's version of anything, though. It's traditionally been the creme de la creme. At one point, Safety Devices and Land Rover were peas and carrots.

That said (and as jwest said), the listing is kinda vague what this thing is made of, how much it weighs, etc. Buying Safety Devices is also buying into the heritage and the "Safety Devices" logo on the side, for whatever that's worth. It does look taller than the Prospeed, but not much. Looks shorter than the Voyager.

Around 2006 there was a Safety Devices Discovery II photo with all their stuff from that period on it and it was set up with at least a 4" lift, 35's, root tent, possibly bead lock wheels, winch bumper, etc. Looked so incredible.

Also, while I said I'd only buy aluminum now, I have to clarify that is for modern rovers without a gutter and our limited suspensions. You can't put a HD spring on to make up for more weight and while air struts do try to adjust, it's not quite the same equation when getting into 400+ lbs on the roof.

The SD steel rack with the EIGHT clamped mount points into a structural gutter was super strong and it doubled as providing some lean/rollover protection.

Not matter what our lr3/4 racks are made of or how well they're welded is irrelevant because the mounts are pretty weak by comparison. Ours are pretty much just sitting on the roof with tiny bolts keep them from flying off.

So, you are better off with our lr3/4 to have the least weight possible up there.
