Question is - how much does it cost to ship a roof rack from FL to TX? 1,200 sounds fishy.

To reiterate, NO, this is not the "question" ;)
The question is 'who is contacting you?' What it does cost to ship the rack is actually 100% irrelevant. I don't care if someone is asking you to cough up $1 $100 or $1000, they might as well ask for $100M.

If I were you I would gently inquire for more information as if you plan to pay the request, to gather data to report them to FBI for interstate commerce fraud. Get an address of where to send a check, emails to use for paypal, etc.

Not totally related, but I had a terrible experience with Voyager. The shipping for two sliders was over $300 (this is 5 years ago). Then they started to rust almost immediately. They offered to have me ship it back (at my expense) so they can repaint it. As if I was going to pay $600 in round-trip freight just for them to give it a second coat of the awful paint they used. I used them for 2-3 more years until the kids were grown enough to not need them. By that point they looked like they had been in the ocean under water for that long. Ended up selling them for 10% what I paid on craigslist and spend endless hours trying to repair the rust damage they caused.

Voyager is looking into it as we speak.

Any my question with regards to cost was me just trying to figure out how the Carrier (R&L Carriers) came to such an absurd number (in my mind). It was a Sunday night and the offices of all parties' were closed.

As for some responses. Yes it could be fraud, but all offices were closed on Sunday night, and nothing would be determined at that point in the weekend. So I did the next best thing, assume the Carrier does have some sort of claim, I would believe their claim would have to be limited to some form of reasonable compensation if true. My initial reaction was 1,200 would not be reasonable, and I just wanted to confirm my thought on that. That is all.

Appears to be a goofy mistake by the Carrier. Voyager is professionally taking care of the issue.

Life is back to normal.

Just to be clear, I never had any ill intentions or vibes toward Voyager. This was a carrier foul up from the beginning.

I bought a well known roof rack about six months ago. Today I received a $1,200 bill for failure of the seller to pay said bill. The roof rack did not even cost that much and I believe I paid for shipping. I don’t have the invoice anymore.

Question is - how much does it cost to ship a roof rack from FL to TX? 1,200 sounds fishy.

Thoughts?

Scott

If it was shipped common carrier, I could see $1200. Many times, unless you have an account the rates are astronomical. For example, I have many accounts that are 80 or 90% discount.

Correct. Carrier rates are based on a system from a bygone era. "Base rates" are ususally thousands of dollars and then pretty much anyone would get a courtesy 60% discount off those rates. "Shipper" rates would depend on the industry and type of materials being shipped - as mentioned discounts can get into the 90's% these days, so it seems completely absurd but a shipment that comes to $3000 gross may end up with an invoice that comes to less than $300 in the end. However, if the carrier changed the bill to you, they would only have the minimum discount available (60%), the invoice would be $1200. I wish cars had that kind fo discount!

Unfortunately by law the consumer is liable if the carrier is not paid. Who is the carrier? First I would chase down voyager to get them to pay. If unsuccessful I would get quotes and use the lowest to negotiate. I would then explore small claims against voyager.

See the OP's post from nearly 3 weeks ago. Voyager stepped up and the issue is resolved.

this is a good lesson however. If you are buying something that is going to be a lot for shipping, make sure you print out that shipping is included and make sure you are dealing with a reputable company that has been around for a while. As has been pointed out, if the shipper is not paid, the consumer is on the hook for it.
