I just purchased a 28k mile 2016 LR4 Landmark to replace my 115k mile 2006 LR3. I have owned the LR3 since new and it’s been a great truck. All I’ve done is 285/18 Terra Grapplers, oil, brakes, water pump, alternator, coolant crossover and luckily compressor and struts under warranty around 40k miles. I know control arms, major fluids, plugs/wires and other PM is coming if I want to keep the LR3. I don’t hear any noise from the timing chain at this time. Keep in mind, this truck has never seen wading depths or trails. I just want a capable vehicle to get me out of urban and rural oh **** scenarios. I’m struggling with upgrading the LR4 or leaving it stock and dumping 7-10K into a LR3 worth half that to the market. Any suggestions?

That's a good predicament to be in. I am currently getting my lower control arms replaced in my 06 LR3 it's going to cost $986 for parts and labor.

I'd keep both. There is no good reason to sell a well sorted LR3. Unless you are the only driver in your household and the two vehicles serve the same purpose.

Unfortunately, an 06 lr3 is only worth about $10k or less now, even $6k. I understand the thoughts you're having. I'd not put any more into it. Resale will still be about the same regardless.

I have over 160k on my 08 LR3 and it is about ready for another set of control arms. Every time a semi-major expense comes up I contemplate a 13 LR4 or 16 Landmark myself, but it's so hard to justify the price when the LR3 still drives great! Plus I don't have that "oh $#@!, where did that new scratch come from?" fear anymore :D.

If you need a "beater truck" for animals, camping, hauling stuff, or simply on days where you are going to have severe weather (like hail), then keep it and let the Landmark be the sunny day special truck!

I agree with catman, I was going to say the exact same thing. Keep both and don't worry as much on the LR3, you have already done some of the more expensive maintenance. The suspension is by far been my biggest expense. Then if something happens with the LR4, you don't have to downgrade to some crappy car, but get to still ride in luxury.

I find this "beater" truck stuff silly. Most people use their only rover for all the purposes and nobody is going to want to try hauling a yard of mulch inside it anyway. "animals, camping..." what kind of nasty 'tough mudder' style camping and wild boars or fresh **** deer are you people intending to haul around anyway ? LOL

To me, the rover IS the beater unless you have an older open pick-up truck. For nasty **** I use a trailer which is like 1000% bigger and more useful anyway.

For 'nice' road trips and cruising long distances or just into town I take a wagon which is more economical, much easier to park, goes into any parking garage, still hauls plenty of stuff but I'd never have 2 of basically the exact same machine.

The wagon is the one for 3.5 hours flat Seattle to Winthrop WA ~250 miles with much quicker passing, 50% better fuel economy, 4 seats for other people, and not totally lived in like the LR.

To me a true "beater" is not an lr3 worth $9000, it's maybe a disco 1 or old actual truck worth less than $3000

Just my approach anyway ;)

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I think I’m going to slowly restore the LR3 mechanically and cosmetically. $1000 here and there won’t feel as bad and there is no rush.
