Fair enough @PaulLR3 but that's a Honda Passport....not a Land Rover Defender.

(nothing against the Passport, but it's not the re-make of a globally iconic off-roader)

LOL - So true. I put the taller tires on the Passport to protect the wheels from curbs while being driven by my teenage daughters.

Central auto inflation / deflator system.
The way they did it ( if it is true) seams to me overcomplicated. More and more electronics to fail. What if you want to put different tires ,wheels, to replace low profile stock tires with high profile E rated tires. I met people who were land rover fans and they are buying Wranglers now.
Well done JLR. But let's wait and see the final product.

I wish they would lift the rear part of the roof and put the small curved windows on the top.. I think that would make it go from "meh" to "hey, that's the new Defender!"..

Sadly, I think JLR is out.

Last of the iconic offroaders list is now down to the

If I were buying a new vehicle today, out of the current crop of Rovers, I would buy a Wrangler.

As Metallica said, Sad But True.

This new thing is not going to be a Defender. Seems most likely that it will **** off the Defender purists for not being a real Defender, and will most likely **** me off that it was not the new Discovery 5.

There is a very fine line of success for JLR to walk here, but I am not optimistic that they will pull it off.

Then there is the whole Slovakia angle.... And I am a fan of Slovakian manufacturing. But a Slovakian Rover? How does that play to the masses.

As I said before, I hope I am mistaken.

JLR clearly doesn’t see how to spring board off the success/**** of the Defender. I said it before, the formula isn’t hard here. Why must they destroy the fun? Roof top tent option? If that real then stop right there. Roof top tents are for the Instagram Tacoma crowd....good luck JLR, I look forward to the new owner (when it happens) going back to the roots.

What’s going to really **** me off is when someone asks if my LR4 is a new Defender....

Just keep buying LR4s, we are 10 years away from the supply getting real tight. By that time I should know how to fix most things. I have a 06 LR3 that is still doing daily duty and she just had her 13th birthday. The LR4 is a pup at 9 years old lol.

Auto inflation / deflation of tires. New instrument panel built in house (eww)
Possible camper roof?

"It should give the Mercedes G-Class a run for its money". That satement in the article says volumes about where this thing is going to be priced...

I expect there are going to be a lot of variants for this vehicle if JLR can garner enough sales to justify the development of them. That is probably why it looks a bit more mainstream - to appeal to as broad an audience as possible.

I actually like the look of it as a modern D5. As many have mentioned, it seems more like the natural evolution of the LR4 than of the Defender. Based on the front end (in the Tusk concept), it seems like it is built into the same theme as every other LR, so there are literally no unique vehicles in the LR lineup. Just endless variations of a similar concept....
