Is this normal!?!

I’ve got my 2011 LR 4 apart replacing the water pump, oil cooler tube, crossover pipe, thermostat etc... anything related to cooling. When I pulled the intake I noticed the carbon build up. is this normal? Is there anything I can do to clean them or just let it be? 180,000 on the clock( didn’t want to start a new thread so added on to this)

On earlier direct injected engines I believe it is. A product of combustion blow-by and no detergent gasoline working to keep that area clean.

The BMW set seems to swear by walnut shell blasting to clean it out.

I wonder if running sea foam on a regular basis would help clean that up.

Seafoam would make no difference assuming you are putting it in the gas tank. Fuel is injected downstream of the intake valves. BG or similar introduced through the vacuum system might do some good. I doubt that build up really hurts anything though.

Not if you are running it the fuel.

The issue is that no gasoline mist hits that area. The fuel is injected directly into the cylinder combustion chamber. Fuel never touches the intake track on these engines

It is the reason you currently see some makers including a port fuel injector on some models in place of or in addition to direct injection.

Does anyone have a list of part numbers for everything you would need for the front and rear pipes?

I haven't done it yet myself, but from my notes I have.

1. LR018275 TUBE WATER OUTLET TO CYLINDER BLOCK (includes oring) aka ENGINE COOLANT CROSSOVER PIPE. ENGINE COOLANT OUTLET FLANGE. WATER MANIFOLD. WATER OUTLET.

2. LR077042 rear coolant pipe

3. LR028136 engine oil cooler inlet hose - high chance of breaking this when doing the job

That’s good to know, just had the fuel system cleaned on my wife’s 08’ Range Rover with 70k but that’s the 4.4jag motor, is that a different setup then the 5.0?

You know the backside of the valves don't look bad at all. Some build up on the stems etc that may affect performance? I would leave it but then again I am lazy lol.
