However, I was in Walmart this morning and saw Castrol Edge in the 5gal container for a per-quart price roughly half of what I paid for the "Professional" stuff from my JLR dealer. Is the difference between Castrol Edge and Castrol Edge Professional the same as the diff between Mobil1 and Mobil1 EP?
It is very likely a similar scenario as the Mobil-1, especially if the price is drastically different. Based on the Castrol website, neither the regular Edge or Edge EP are approved for use in the LR4 engine, as neither meets the WSS-M2C925-A spec (yes, they both meet other Ford specs, but not the one needed for JLR).

I would stick with the Edge Professional, which is a different formula. Given the expense of repairing the direct-injection engine, I personally don't think this is an area to economize...

Thanks and I agree on the false economy (at least for me) of trying to shave pennies on stuff like this. I've turned over a new leaf with this LR4. I was great about frequent oil changes in the last one using Mobil1 but fed it regular unleaded for the most part. Now it's Edge Professional and Top Tier premium gas all the time.

I knew that sources of CEP were few in number, but it's crazy that the stuff doesn't even appear on the Castrol website through its own oil finder tool! Thanks again.

Here is what I have seen in Mobil 1 5W-20 at Walmart in 5 quart bottles:
- Mobil 1 at $20
- Mobil 1 Extended Performance at $30
- Mobil 1 Annual Protection at $40

So is Mobil 1 AP even higher quality than Mobil 1 EP?

The Movil-1 AP is a new product, and I don't know much about it... but yes, it does appear to be a notch up from the EP. I am curious what the exact differences are between EP and AP. The BITOG forum might have some discussion about the new AP stuff.

I have committed to using Castrol Edge Professional in my 2013 from now on and did so on the oil change I did when I took delivery of this vehicle about 5 weeks ago.

Who knows. Professional meets the mysterious Ford 925 standard (which is long since outdated) . My belief is the 925 standard is for extended drains that LR was touting while selling the LR4 (1 year or 24k kms). I have used M1 EP doing yearlies and then when I got spooked about dirty oil perhaps being related to wearing timing chain guide noise I changed my tactics.

I now change oil and filter in the spring and do an oil change in the fall. I typically put about 18k kms/year so about 5-6k miles between oil changes. I dissected my filter after the year and it was almost pristine . I don't think the once a year change on that will be an issue. With these mileages no need for an extended drain oil.

Current oil being used is Pennzoil Ultra Platinum. YMMV.

My latest UOA is attached. Wear metals all look great, iron is down, but it was a shorter interval this time (7k, vs 10k last time). TBN was a bit lower despite fewer miles, but the oil was also in the sump for 21 months on the 7kmi, vs 15 months over 10kmi, and the longer time may have dropped the TBN despite the lower miles.

Both of these oil changes were using Castrol oil that I purchased in bulk from the local Land Rover dealership; they pumped out of their 55 gallon drum into my gallon jugs. This was also the last time I was able to source 5W-20 from the dealer, they only carry 0W-20 now, which I wasn't interested in.

So, the LR4 now has Red Line 5W-20 in the sump. I may change it early just to get an idea of what the numbers look like (i.e., change at 4kmi instead of 7kmi). The additive package is probably very different in the Red Line but I'll find out details in the next analysis. I'm expecting higher levels of ZDDP and moly, but perhaps a bit less calcium. As long as the wear metals remain low and TBN is north of 1.0 I'll be a happy camper.

Side note: Oil consumption appears to be zero on the electronic dipstick, but I am measuring 1 quart less drained out than I had put in. Also, there were a dozen or two dragstrip runs this spring. :D

Mine is exactly the same. Electronic dipstick reads full but the Mityvac only pulls out 7 quarts at 7500 mile oil change intervals.

I just did an oil change today. Running Mobile 1 5W-20.

I only pulled out about 7 -7.5 quarts as well.

Electronic dipstick sometimes showed full, or half on the quantity. 57k miles on the '13 V8.

Anyone else have slight oil consumption? Glad I'm not the only one..

I swapped my oil out tonight too. Put in Motul Specific 5w-20.

Immediately noticed around 10 hp gain on the but dyno. Got home and saw I had a message on my phone. It was my 5k mile-old timing chain guides, calling to tell me they're going to live forever.

j/k. Can't tell a difference. But I feel a lot better about myself now.
