Expanding on the fluids recommended for these changes.... any recommendations on any particular brands or any additives? I’m about to pull the trigger on a ‘13 also. Loved my 04 Disco, was sad to get rid of it, def a love/hate here!

There are a couple of engine oil threads that will have all you need to know. Short version is use name-brand synthetic 5W-20 and change it a lot more often than the owner's manual says to (5-7kmi, not 15k, for normal service). No additives needed.

And my answer was still in post #42. I'm not trying to be snarky, but Shell is a major name brand in the lubrication industry, and since the new Rotella GTS product is a full-synthetic available in 5W-20 viscosity, there's no reason it would harm the LR4 gas engines if changed frequently.

Now, if you want an oil that is explicitly "recommended" for the official JLR/Ford WSS-M2C925-A spec, Rotella GTS isn't it. However it does have an "OEM approval" for the Ford WSS- M2C945-B1 spec.

BITOG thread on this new oil, if you're interested:

There's a VOA on the 5W-30 version of GTS here if you scroll down:

Looks like Rotella GTS has similar levels of zinc & phosphorus (ZDDP) and moly, compared to the dealer Castrol EDGE Professional, but GTS has far less calcium (nearly 1/3!), and quite a bit more magnesium. Starting TBN is on the low side as well.

Also not trying to be snarky but #42 didn't remotely answer the question. There isn't a single search result except for this thread when searching these forums for Rotella GTS (or Rotella Gas or whatever). Just a bunch of mostly old references to Rotella, long before GTS existed. Your latest post #47 however, did answer perfectly. Most are fully aware you can use many options safely as you stated in 42, but I was curious to see some data or personal experience around Rotella GTS.

Regarding your earlier post 42 though, that's not a completely true statement either. The 5.0 is a bit picky and not all brand name synthetics work as well as others. For instance, my engine is not happy and noisier with Mobil1 High Mileage and a couple other brands I've tried...even immediately after an oil change. I have, however, used Mobil1 EP for the past 30k miles with great results with changes every 6-7k.

Sounds like you have all the answers you were looking for, smart guy.

But seriously, the general consensus here is that a good quality synthetic changed every 6500 to 7000 miles is the ticket. Different people have had different "favorites." Most people enjoy using the Mobil 1 Extended Performance. Others use different fluids, but that's probably more due to self-satisfaction than any real, measurable difference, as the people on here with really high mileage engines don't seem to have been too picky with regard to what oil they've used. It's all just picking nits, as the one pattern that seems to have revealed itself regarding problems with the engines on these things is long oil change intervals, but even that is still mostly speculation.

More specifically, the Rotella oil you are asking about is too new for anyone to really give you an objective answer, because no engine will have been using it long enough to determine whether it's the ticket or not. In fact, it's going to be impossible, as it's just about impossible for any LR4 engine to have been using the new Rotella from the getgo, so that leaves open the possibility that an engine could develop problems from wear it received before using the new Rotella. Therefore, the only thing that can be responsive to your question is thus either (a) mostly speculation, based on the general principles we've come to know, or (b) ********.

For (a), yes, the new Rotella is a quality synthetic. Change it every 6500 to 7000 miles and you're probably golden.

For (b), yes, the new Rotella is fantastic. I've read studies of these engines using it for 100,000 miles, and they've seen increased fuel economy, power, and regenerative wear parts.

Good point about it being so new that it’s speculation.
