The prices for engines seems outrageous to me. What’s driving these costs versus the lr3 v8s and the majority of other v8 engines that can be found for significantly less, used?
It's generally supply & demand, combined with being fairly new. And, some salvage yards look at what the competitor pricing is, and they list their engine in the same price range. Doesn't mean many are actually selling for that much.

I think as time goes on the prices will drop, but currently there's not a lot out there below $5-$6k. With some good detective work it may be possible to locate a good one for less.

Ditto, supply and demand. The LR3 V8 is more reliable. And in far greater supply as more are nearing end of life/depreciation, far more money can be made in breaking them now. The '10-'11 models are starting to approach that break even point.

That is not what I recall reading over the years, but I could be wrong.

"I would probably just sell as is or part it out for lots of marital fun!".

ktm525, ya just made me snort my coffee up my nose still being half asleep. Best quote of the year the wifey just told me.

On used engines from the likes of Pick-n-Pull's or other breakers they are in the quick and dirty not wasting another second by performing a compression check on their new arrivals.
Would you even trust some Spanish speaking employee's word in Spanish or a piece of paper with compression number scribbled down not alone performed properly?
Even if a compression check done by a straight gauge compression the basic minimum of tests only checking how even all cylinders are is one thing but not as accurate as performing a leak down check. Between a leak down check, reading the plugs, general engine condition like no leaks including looking inside with a endoscope the best you can looking for normal varnish vs a sludge *** of an engine your rather safe in finding a good used engine. Look at the vehicle overall, it has a nice shiny paint a well taken care of vehicle vs one of oxidized paint giving you a clue how it was taken care of. Best if it has been smacked placing it out of commission and a donor parts vehicle.
There are several large breakers specializing in foreign vehicles, Mercedes, Jag, LR, BMW that do perform compression checks plus guaranteed a good used engine not a pig in a poke ****. Sad note they are more expensive used engines, adding pallet and shipping fees.
On Pick-n-Pull's I can do a 158 mile loops hitting three of them with Sacramento (northern Calif.) 92 miles away a separate 184 mile loop.
A big WHEN & IF, should a LR come in model and two years only of my interest especially at a time when a 40% off weekend sale is offered i'll hit the road. Early September coming up another 50% off holiday sale hoping to find another LR at that time not already stripped.
Between sale times always checking the night before what hits the public the next morning as i'll be there when the gates open.
This was how we snagged cheap almost like new used LR4 heads for another friend's sick LR4 engine. He only paid $4,500 for a garage queen LR4, "not running you tow" hence worth the labor and money a 58K mile LR4 just over $5,000 total investment......~~=o&o>......

Spent $205 vs thousands plus of stealership cost. Early September coming up another 50% off holiday sale hoping to find another LR at that time not already stripped.
