Hello. New to the forum. Not new to land rovers. Had a few over the years. The latest is a 2008 l322 which I absolutely adore. Nearly trouble free besides a couple minor items for all 120k miles. Love the truck but it’s age is showing. Most of which are winter in the snow, summer in the sand and mud, and all around off road in the Hudson valley in the fall and spring. All be it absolutely nothing too intense.

I always loved the lr4 and want to get a late model before they age too much. I’ve noticed a strong preference for the 2013 v8. I like the facelift and even though we all have to admit the electronics are dated I want the latest possible in the best condition truck.

Can anyone tell me the specific changes 2014-2016. Is any year better than the other? All the ones I’m finding have around 50k miles give or take. I drive very little. Usually less than 5-8k a year. Half that is highway getting where I’m going but I do spend a lot of time doing mild off-road. Basically one step beyond dirt roads. I also spend a lot of time in the sand on the cape in summer.

How are these with the 8 speed and different set up? Is one year truly a step above the others? Is there any major thing to look for and any options to possibly stay away from? Just any input. I know it’ll be suggested to go for an older but I’m really set on the facelift and a later model. As you can see from my 2008 which I bought in 2010 and still running strong 9 years later I’ll probably keep it quite a while so I just want to make sure I’m getting the best year. The 2008 rr seemed to be when they just got everything right and I think mine is proof. People think it’s way newer and way ore expensive and are shocked at the rise quality and capability.

Thanks for the input!

Welcome.

I've had a 2014 and currently drive a 2015, both were ordered LUX, with the HD package and most every option except satellite radio. For MY2015 and newer, they began offering the Adaptive Cruise control which I passed on due to the $1600 (+/- ?) additional premium.

When test driving prior to the 2014 purchase I drove a 2013, with the V8. While I know there is a numerical HP difference, and a large following on here, I don't think the loss of 35 HP is a critical buying factor. The 8 speed transmission takes care of some of that loss. Its a fun rig to drive through the first 3 or 4 gears, it gets going very quickly for a 6000 lb vehicle. And the sound of the supercharger albeit fairly quiet, paired with the 8 speed offers something unique.

As far as problem go, our 2014 blew its oil intercooler at 4500 miles. It was a bummer, but all worked out in the end, hence the 2015. I haven't heard of anyone else on here with that problem. I read this site daily. No problems to date with our 2015. :****: Just passed 45K.

2014 - 2016 did not come standard with the HD package, (2 speed transfer case, locking center and rear differentials, full size spare). These vehicles are more than capable without the HD package.

Keep reading up on this site, there is plenty of info to be had.

If the facelift is the only reason you want a '14 to '16, you can buy a '13 and add the facelift yourself with relatively little fuss (headlights, grill, and, if you really want it, a bumper). I wouldn't make that the sole deciding factor.

Think long and hard about the presence, or lack thereof, of the HD package on a s 2014+.

If you get one without, and later decide you want it, your only recourse is a different truck.

Excuse my lack of knowledge but first off what does the HD package include, was it available on 2014 on trucks? I’m obviously going to do a search now so I’ll probably answer that. How do I spot a truck with the package? I am obviously looking online and the information can be lacking. How necessary is it really?

Welp pretty much everyone one I’ve had my eye on has been a lux package and that’s what I want and now I see that comes standard with towing and heavy duty. Still curious what everyone’s opinion is on real world use of the HD package. Especially for someone like me. I spend my little off-road time in lots of soft beach sand, sloppy grassy fields, and some very steep rocky roads but certainly a far cry from rock crawling of any type. Mainly old logging roads in the Hudson valley and catskills. My 2008 Range Rover gets through everything without flinching so I imagine a nearly ten year newer rover would do the same?

Also any comments on the last of the lr4s in comparison to say a 2014 - 2015 full size Range Rover. That was what I was originally looking for but the digital dash is just such a turn off to me. I can’t get used to it. I like gauges and knobs. And I love the look of the lr4 as well. Not so much the new discovery.

On '10 to '13 LR4s, the HD package just included the electric rear locker. A center diff with low range was standard.

On '14 to '16.5 LR4s, the low range center diff was put into the HD package (along with the rear e-locker), meaning only the HD package had it. Most LR4s of those years only have a high range center diff.

It's not standard with the lux, either. It's pretty rare. Usually, looking on cargurus, only one '14 to '16.5 LR4 out of maybe fifteen has the HD package.

I would want a locker for the beach.

Somewhere on YouTube is a video of an LR3 cooking it's brakes to the point of failure from the traction control trying to cope with the sand.

I will go see if I can find it.

I always see the 2013 recommended but I specifically went with 2015+ for a few reasons. First, I love the radar cruise, had it on my 2010 Autobiography and my Toyota Sequoia before that. Second, I live in Boulder, CO and the power loss at altitude is quite noticeable. My 2006 RR feels like a bit of a dog, my 2010 Supercharged 5.0 was amazing, but when faced with a 5.0 non-supercharged or a 3.0 supercharged I chose the 3.0 due to the ease of getting some of that power back. I put a tune and an overdrive pulley on it and now it gets up and goes just fine. Third, I love the 8 speed transmission. Even with my 2010 RR having over 500hp it still would start "chugging" up steep tight turns (which there are quite a few of in the mountains) at speeds around 15mph. It would shift up a gear, but not quite have the power to pull the gear smoothly. No such issues with the 8 speed.
