2015 LR4 Check Engine Light

Have a 2015 LR4 Check Engine Light that just started going on & off randomly. (Currently OFF but dealership says they can see Error Code History of it).

The dealership says there are no physical issues whatsoever with engine with pumps etc.

The vehicle is still under CPO and they said a not covered $245 software update which includes diagnostic fee should fix it. Any experience with this?

A software update seems like an improbable fix. Concerned larger issue at stake or false indicator. Why a random software update now, no changes have been made to the vehicle whatsoever and it is in pristine condition w/all maintenance up to date and no damages what so ever. Just was in for service recently and no issue came up.

I’m doubtful the software upgrade would fix as well...do you happen to know what the code was?

Also, if they are going to make you pay, you might get the manager involved and have them agree if the $245 does not fix it that they will eat the cost. Just an thought, $245 is 1/2 the cost of a GAP IID tool with which you can update any ECM for $35 and see/clear the stored codes for free, plus a lot of other handy features.

If it’s me, I’m taking the truck to a nearby qualified independent and getting them to have a look, and if planning on keeping the truck, I’d suggest the Gap tool is well worth the investment

Do you have a center console cooler?

What were the error codes they pulled?

Our 2015 had a software update completed under warranty to address bad software code that affected the center console cooler which was tied to other odd electrical gremlins. Here’s more info.

I believe something along the lines of "***" is required here. Where do they get off asking $245 for a software update that will resolve a known issue? Especially since you're under CPO. Ask them if they get service packs for their computers for free (they do) and they ask them how a patch for the software in your vehicle is any different. I'd also go with the @scott schmerge approach as a last resort and make them commit to paying for it if it doesn't address the issue.

Thanks to all for the input! I'll ask error code #, but this was the ERROR as described:
- Fuel pressure fault code
Again the Yellow Engine Light is randomly illuminated when driving.

Aside from potentially fixing this problem, what would an LR4 SOFTWARE UPDATE actually do? I.E. what are the practical benefits? I don't care about the new GPS, digital graphics or anything else, unless it would make the car run/drive better which I don't see how that is possible.

It's weird that this isn't part of CPO when it's probably the most simple thing to do. The car did not have updated software when I bought a year or so ago, I was told this is not included.

I'm beginning to think that CPO is worthless.

I would be looking at the low pressure fuel sensor with that fault code based on discussions here.

It is located on the side of the transmission bell housing IIRC. Cheap and relatively easy fix.

If that is the code, I would suggest that to the dealer, and I would expect that to be a warranty item.

ETA: And if the vehicle is a keeper for you, get a GAP tool as previously suggested.

***UPDATE***. Exactly that. P0089/64 is what they said. Low Pressure Fuel Sensor.

this should be covered under warranty even if it is a software update. not sure who your dealership is or your relationship with them but factory warranty and cpo both cover this type of nonsense. if the dealer gives you push-back tell them to park the car and not do anything until you speak with JLR/USA.

All these random stupid issues with the CPO and factory warranty makes me glad I didn’t get either. This forum has been more than I’ve ever needed so far and when things get beyond me/us to the independent mechanic I will go!

I'd take it to another dealer, assuming you have one in the area.

If not, I'd ask for a comprehensive detailed explanation of what they think a firmware update is going to do, and a specific explanation of what clause in your CPO agreement states this has to be on your dollar.

My dealer was pretty damn good with my CPO warranty. The only thing it didn't cover was "wear" items, which unfortunately include lower control arm bushings.
