We just picked up a 2012 LR4 HSE with 77K miles. Runs and drives great. So 2 questions -

1. I had a pre-inspection done by an independent mechanic and it passed with flying colors. However he car is 2 hours away and on the way home the check engine light came on. Should I complain to the mechanic ? or is it just bad luck ?

2. What should maintenance should I do first ?

Thanks,

Bryan

If the mechanic ran codes as part of his PPI and nothing came up, then I’d say he’s off the hook. Things happen. If he didn’t run codes, you might have a gripe but there are still never any guarantees when you purchase pre-owned (unless you pay a lot more for a vehicle that is certified by the dealer).

FWIW, the CEL could be something relatively simple like an oxygen sensor which can be addressed for around $300. Not chump change, but not a bad welcome to Land Rover ownership.

Maybe the mechanic will extend a break to you on the repair if you ask nicely and if you intend to have that shop do your maintenance anyway...

So I took her into dealer for the 75k tune-up. No issues to speak of except for evap pump needs replaced. I declined and thought I could do it. I replaced it on my Passat last month. Can't really find any info on this, has anyone done this ? Can you share the proper procedure ?

Evap pump is part of the charcoal canister and pulls a vacuum across the system when the car is started. If it detects a leak it gives a check engine light, I have seen several posts where they go bad on the LR4. In my Passat it was above the passenger rear wheel behind a cover. I found it on Topix for the LR4 but not how to replace it.

So that's why I am asking for help.

Is this the same thing as the DMTL pump?

If so, it is located on the stamped metal shelf above the spare tire storage area under the rear of the vehicle.

I believe it is. My dealer replaced when I convinced them it was related to a car crunching my rear quarter panel.

They charged $800 CAN ($600 US) split evenly between the cost of the DMTL and labor.
