Yes ar077, sorry I meant Td6. Your experience in the posts relates mostly to other brands, specifically I'm looking for comments on the D5 diesel. Those issues causing the buyback seemed to be unrelated to the diesel, but I agree with you 100%, I want the diesel for the mileage factor. My LR3 has a ton of miles but the fuel economy as we all know sucks. I guess the question is whether or not all the other issues have fixes and buying a buyback D5 is a wise choice.

My '17 D5 Td6 was $74K out the door, including tax but not registration. If "buyback" means that the owner couldn't make the payments and that there's nothing wrong with the vehicle then you should be able to get a steal of a deal on a low-mileage Td6 with years left on the warranty. Mine, with 22K miles, has had no problems.

Buyback means the vehicle was reacquired by the manufacturer because it was lemon law'ed. A repossessed vehicle is not considered a buyback.

Thanks for the education! Does that put it in the same category as a salvaged vehicle? If not, I'd thoroughly research the vehicle's history and corrective actions before considering purchasing it.

Our buyback was documented by the dealer and was returned in CA for a rattle. The laws in CA and NJ make it pretty easy to return a vehicle for any reason. Our dealer here is known for purchasing these mainly from the west coast and offering deals. We had it checked out by our mechanic and he said it was flawless. If you try hard, you can make out what may be a rattle, but if you've owned an LR previously, you'd laugh at it. The buyback does flag it on a Carfax but since we drive them till the wheels fall off, it made for a good situation for us. The deal said they would give full credit on it as well on trade in even with the "buyback" scarlet letter on the carfax. Plus it came with the full warranty from the factory so we felt pretty covered.

So, I traded my ultra-reliable LR4 for the new Discovery. It was a hard decision. I had to be convinced to buy an LR4 after experiences with the LR3, but I literally had to pry my hands off the wheel of my 2012 LR4 V8 after 80K. I know, just a baby, but the tax breaks are too good for me not to upgrade these days.

Thank you so much for this post. I love my LR4 but it is getting old and feel like it's just a matter of time before a major repair comes up. I also hate missing out on the section 179 tax breaks that could go away someday. Just need to decide between a Discovery or Defender. Both my builds come up to $75K and I suspect you get more value in the Discovery for the same price.
