Sadly so, which is why I hoped with the Defender it would be a true Off-Road purpose built vehicle with all the trim and bits you mentioned.

this is going to be a total joke. The problem is that hype never matches reality. My guess is this ends up looking something like a Ford Flex and a Kia Soul had a love child.

Prepare for bitter disappointment. Anything you have to hype this much certainly can't live up to it. Reminds me of Lebron james and "The Decision"

Seriously and sadly, this has $h!T box written all over it. JLR execs bought into their agency hyping this thing to no end. Watch it get totally panned by any potential buyer.

I could be wrong, but that happens rarely.

You'd think, that, the nav system/interface would be one of those things in an LR vehicle (a mode of transportation inspired and designed from the ground up, as at least the claim is, to go where others can't and with ease) that would not only be top notch and miles ahead from the rest from which other manufacturers would draw their future ideas from, but practically unbreakable regardless of whatever the traffic conditions and unchartered terrain it would find itself in.

You'd think that a nav in an LR would be the result of exhausting and taking advantage of all currently available technologies, taking advantage of cell towers, satellites, live data streams, bluetooth, etc, etc, to always bring up on the interface thee most accurate, up to date, and absolutely the best guidance options possible, regardless of what time and where you find yourself in.

Totally agree. If you can't engineer a good nav system internally, then do what Honda did and partner with someone who already developed the technology. When we select nav in our Passport, the first thing you see for a few seconds is the word "Garmin" before the beautiful 3D map appears.

I hope we're wrong, but it could easily be a Ford Flex & Kia Soul love child disaster. What engine are we getting? Something all new? Or the rough & slow Discovery Sport 4-cylinder?
Maybe the 2010 LR4 5.0 with 4 cylinders plugged and a turbo added?

Well all the speculation should be done soon but in my mind it’s basically the LR4/successor rather than a true Defender... in fact I can even imagine it may have its origins in an LR5 Design exercise. It being the heritage toughness study. Marketing weighed in and said let’s take a more of a crossover approach since that’s where the volume is and that’s how we got the wretched Discovery...

Interesting that LR’s exterior design Chief is a former Ford and Kia Designer so it makes some sense that we see Flex and Soul here.. not bad cars but definitely not what we were hoping for. And definitely not a look that commands a price premium, as Defender may have an entry price on the 2 door upwards of 60k

It’s a shame as they could’ve easily taken the G-wagen approach and philosophy, made it more of a proper Defender, and had an Icon that everyone was pleased with and warranted the price premium.

Now it’s up to the forthcoming Bronco to fill that space.

From my experience Audi and then BMW have the best factory navigation systems currently with RTTI that is incredibly accurate with Inrix data. Audi's RNS-E unit was a decade ahead of the competition in the 2006. No other Marque offered something better or comparable until nearly ten years later which was already phased out on most Audi vehicles and replaced with a Google Maps based system with TMC. Quite a feat.

^This is so true. The RNS-E unit in my 2006 A4 avant made us realize the nav in our 2008 LR3 was a joke. I considered getting a new Q7 but couldn't get past having regular tires (not run flats) without any spare tire. Land Rovers are some the few vehicles to still offer a full size spare tire.
