This is LA... Everyone wants the latest and greatest car, right now and before anyone else. It may be a different story elsewhere.

I went to a local dealer (Land Rover Pasadena) with the intention of putting down a deposit on a 2020 110 Defender HSE with some options. Their sales guy informed me that, as of right now, they are asking 20K over MSRP to even take an order. I laughed and walked out.

It looks like I'll be waiting a year or two like the rest of you... I didn't mean to wait, but I will.

HAHAHAHA. ****. Not like this is a limited addition. What a joke. Apparently, they must be the only dealership in the country who hasn't seen one of these yes.

Wow, 20k over MSRP is something JLR USA Corporate may want to know about. They do want to actually sell a lot of these things after all and considering the negative impression it leaves and how much they put a leash on dealers to prevent them from cross-selling into neighboring markets, I would think this would be something extreme enough to warrant an internal discussion. Unless NY, Chicago, Miami, LA are unique markets that they just leave alone...(sorry if I left anyone in a major market out of my list, it is not all inclusive

Looks like your LR4 is going to hit the 250k mark before it gets replaced!

I'm curious how much the Defender will depreciate.

You can buy a 2016 Range Rover V8 Supercharged with around 30k miles on it for $60k right now. That was around $110k when new 3 years ago. So that's about 55% in 3 years and 30k miles.

I'm guessing the first round of off-lease Defenders won't depreciate nearly that much, because there's going to be a slew of people waiting to buy them up. Not sure how many used ones will come up for sale other than off lease for the first few years, at least.

But still, within a year or so that dealer premium won't mean anything, and an extra $20k in depreciation will be a hard pill to swallow.

Incredible!

But hey- if they can get it -then good for them.....
Dealer mark-ups are to be expected on this type of vehicle I guess...

Jokes aside it would be interesting to see a depreciation study of LR product over the last ten years or so. Just to see which models took the biggest hits. I’ve gotta guess Defenders will be no different. Factoring that in, a 20k tip at the dealership is pretty remarkable!

Want more insanity? Land Rover of Encino (another large local dealer, part of a network that owns a bunch of JLR dealerships in California) confidently adds $30,000 to the sticker of all new Defenders right now, which makes LR Pasadena seem like a pretty good deal by comparison, lol. They flat out told me (via email, at least they were nice enough not to trick me into driving there for nothing) that they don't know of any dealer not doing so. Say what you will about the practice, that's ballsy of them!

Basically, if you live in SoCal chances of ordering one of these vehicles at a price even remotely approaching MSRP are slim to none right now, unless you know someone who knows someone I guess. Might as well pretend the reveal never happened and wait a year or so, until the feeding frenzy has subsided a bit.

Also, Encino won't take deposits until they are actually "able to order them" (order books still aren't open to US dealers apparently), they will call you when you want to come down and order your $120K Defender which, in their estimation, should arrive some time next spring or summer.

Oh well, I guess they don't want my money right now. I remember purchasing one of the first RRS in the US back in the summer of 2005, off the dealer's showroom (LR of Pasadena), and I paid sticker back then - including for some overpriced accessories I really didn't want, but hey, I had to have that **** white Sport. These same folks sure got greedy over time.
