Just spent seven days driving a 2019 Discovery HSE loaner vehicle while my 2016 LR4 HSE Lux was in for some brakes and a few other minor items (rear hatch hard to close; brake fluid change; tire balance / rotation; inspection; car wash; remote battery). Yes I know, seven days for about five hours worth of work! Anyway, I was sooooo glad to be back in the LR4! I drove about 800 miles in the new Disco and while it was a very nice vehicle I did NOT care for it at all! No quirks, no character, no personality, no nice high seating position, no commanding view out, not much cargo space, no transfer case, no locker, no full size wheel/spare...just a nice car. Sure hope the new Defender is more "Land Roverish"!

For my last service visit they loaned me a D5. Usually it is a Evoque, which I hate. The D5 is a nice minivan with 4WD capabilities. I agree it has lost too much of what brought me to LR many years ago. I too was happy to get my LR4 back. The dealer service person did try and get my feedback on the D5 and we had an honest discussion from technology to the overall design language resulting in the entire line all looking the same, just different sizes. Russian dolls. Sales of the D5 are mediocre. The D2 sold at 1700 per month. The D5 is bumping along 500.

I also like my LR4 better than any D5 loaner I have had. We all expect the Defender to be a better LR4 replacement than the D5. However, when I do the "build yours" on the LR website, the Defender and D5 both come out to $75K with the options I want. That creates the dilemma of do I want the extra space/leather seats/more luxury that the D5 offers for the same price? And I'll surely pay sticker price for a Defender while a D5 will have a significant discount.

Elsewhere in these forums, there was some talk about how a number of (California) LR dealers were all asking $20K-$30K OVER sticker. So there may be a bigger price gap than you are expecting...

It usually takes a little time behind the wheel driving different models, such as the 2016 LR4 SCV6, any Evoque, or any D5s, to fully appreciate my 2011 LR4 V8. Unluckily, I had the opportunity to do so while mine was in/out of the stealership for getting work done for various lengths of time.

I thought I would really miss the V8 of my Discovery I & II and LR3 by going to the LR4 V6, but nothing of the sort. I don't tow so maybe that is an issue but the SCV6 is all I would ever need. Surprised me! I also loved the V8 in my MB G500 and would love to have a new one of those but not for their kind of $$$! Good Lord! And "my build" new Defender hits almost $ 80K! Holy crapoli!
