Why would I WANT to clear codes?

I understand that with the gap iid tool I can clear codes, but.... Why would I want to?
Aren't they there to let me know something is wrong. Basically s reminder of something that needs fixing. I would think that removing them could lead to my not fixing something that needs fixing.
Then again, ik may have the complete wrong idea. Can someone please illuminate me on this?

What is the most popular use of this too according to you guys?

there’s about 1 million reasons to have a gap tool. One of those 1million is identify the trouble codes and know what’s wrong...then fix it, then clear the trouble codes after its fixed.

I would not anticipate that a trouble code once cleared, would not come back. If you don’t fix the issue, most assuredly you’ll get the fault code almost immediately after clearing it...

Most popular use is probably reading/clearing codes, followed by setting height differently for street / off-road driving.

There are times when codes may appear without true underlying fault that affects use of the truck.

Here's an example:

Once, with a really weak battery I left my lights on while getting gas. Car wouldn't start. I pull put jumper pack, start car. Go to drive away and almost instant get a restricted performance message. Have a code set for the viscous fan being permanently locked. (?)(!) Car has no power, won't rev, not good for driving through the mountains.

Pull out the IID tool, clear codes, make a quick acceleration pass in a parking lot to make sure car actually works, then drive home.

Was just a complete fluke related to low voltage or the jumpstart process. Not really sure, and its never happened again.

Very glad I had the tool to fix that before the drive home.

(And yes, I bought a new battery 2 days later).

I've also heard (but thankfully never experienced) that sometimes while offroading, a height sensor can throw a errant value and the truck can go to bumpstops. IID tool has ability to reset certain things or manually open/close air valves. Apparently its pretty useful in this situation.

Seems like a HUGE learning curve. I hope that when I do get one, I found ND a way to understand what all of those functions even mean, lol

It all depends how deep you want to get into it. There's a lot of functionality in there, but basic stuff like "read all codes" "clear all codes" is really just two taps away..


Seems like a HUGE learning curve. I hope that when I do get one, I found ND a way to understand what all of those functions even mean, lol

Its not hard to learn and this group knows a ton, but GAP (Patrick) also is incredibly responsive, knowledgeable, and a great resource. This is the first item any Land Rover owner should buy- it has literally saved me thousands of dollars.

The problem is, codes may be stored for a problem that went away, and the code may remain. So when you check the first time, it's possible you are seeing codes for "phantom" problems. If you clear everything, drive a few hundred or few thousand miles, then check codes again... those codes would indicate a current problem.

That said, any serious issues will generally either trigger a warning in the instrument cluster, OR you'll have functional problems with the engine / trans / suspension / etc.

Heck I find codes for systems my truck doesn’t even have lol
