I’m definitely ignorant here. Here is what my noob self assumed: the LR computer told you if TP was low and that was that. This post is making me realize there’s waaaaaaaaay more to it than that! So i need additional sensors on each of my tires? This gives me reading homework for the weekend :/

You don't need any TPMS at all. My LR4 is the first vehicle I've owned that ever had it. My LR3 didn't, and I made out just fine for 10 years with no TPMS. TPMS is a convenience, nothing more. A nice feature? Absolutely. It's probably safe to say it even increases safety. But there's definitely no need for it.

@hatch is right - it's a nice to have. The factory system just gives you state (tire low!) and will even tell you which one (Check the tire pressure in your left front tire!).

However I air up and down a lot when off-roading and I went for the additional information by putting additional third-party external sensors on my tires that send their actual PSI and temperature to the gauge. It will fire off alarms if a tire drops below a preset threshold (set by you) or if a tire loses pressure very rapidly. That last one saved me in Death Valley when I ripped a tire at a good clip and the alarm wailed and I pulled over in a nice controlled manner just in time to see the wheel go flat.

Because I'm very finicky about my tire pressures in many different environments (and know why I have them at different pressures), and I'm a data nerd, I went that way. It's very very very optional for most people.

It's also worth mentioning that the third-party, more data-filled/featured sensors are cheaper than sensors that work with the (dumber) factory system.

This site just cost me more money. Bought the third party one linked earlier. Amazon dropped it the next day. 10 minute install, and it works as advertised. If it had a 5th sensor for a spare, it would be perfect.

Why do you need the 5th sensor for the spare when you can rotate all the tires (assuming your spare goes into the rotation) and then just move the caps around?

Ever been stuck with a flat tire only to find out your spare is flat as well?

It's been a long time, but it happens. Not as likely with the spare on the bumper where you see it as part of your daily routines, but knowing it's at expected pressure would be nice IMO.

Seems like it would be easier just to buy a small compressor.

It's in there under the orange hose somewhere...;)

Thankfully no, but I'm with @hatch - I'd use the compressor which is in the truck.

But to your point, if you DID want to go that route, there are other sensors that come in packs of 6 with a gauge to match that are designed for truck + 2 wheels for the trailer. You could set it to say, trailer Left = spare and trailer Right = not-used.

I think a flat spare, if you're doing regular rotations, is just such an edge case I personally would not worry about it.
