I went to Cartoys today to see what the cost would be to replace the factory and the fiber optic line turned a $500 replacement into a $1600 replacement.

so I thought maybe I could replace the nav screen with a CarPlay capable screen. Has anyone done this and have the best way to make it work. I understand it won’t work with the radio stations, but I want my directions and a streaming music input to work via this screen.

I am trying to do the same thing, and asked question in another subject - but since you started a thread, might as well follow it here.

Response I got was that “there are a few options but wiring might be difficult…”, but did not supply any of the options noted. I would be interested in manufacturers and model numbers… I am pretty good at figuring out wiring/amperage changes/antennae hookup options, etc.

I would just really like to have some current navigation, preferably using the iPhone… Rather than the latest 2012 ‘cd’ that LR has to offer us a LR3 drivers. (I always find it surprising that car companies that thrive on vehicles that are built to “last a lifetime“ don’t provide services that follow…)

Oh,… And I have no issue with removing the radio and replacing it with a unit that would look good!

I installed this android unit recently which uses google maps or other gps navigation you can download from google play plus Android auto using the usb connectivity as well as wifi hotspot from my phone. I can play Iheart Radio or other streaming service while connected to hotspot. It also has built in radio but still use factory harman kardon radio. I connected it to the aux input of the gfactory unit so I retain the use of all steering wheel controls, CD changer, etc.

That is a nice setup...

Would you mind sharing the model number of the unit and where you got it?

And how your wired to aux connector?

Thanks

When I get back home this afternoon, I'll take a photo of the box and post it together with the wiring diagram.

Attached is a picture of the box the unit came in. I'll be honest since I was experimenting on which head unit will work for what I wanted to do, I opted to purchase a ebay unit first so that I won't be out a lot of money if it doesn't work. I got this unit for under a hundred bucks but found out it works fantastic. It does everything I wanted to do so I might keep it. One of the reasons I opted for this one is the shallow profile, plus it fits perfectly in the original nav screen opening. I was even able to secure it by drilling a small hole on the side of the factory plastic cavity of the truck which lined up with the mounting screw hole of the head unit then after replacing the center console, you wont even see any visible screws.

To wire the unit to the aux input of the factory stereo, I found a thread on another LR3 forum showing how the OP spliced his aftermarket head unit to the factory radio. On the back of the factory unit, there is a harness that has 3 wires and plastic connector next to the main harness. This is the aux input. Blue, Brown and Black I believe which corresponds to Left, Right and Shield. I grabbed an old audio rca cable and cut one end off to splice into the aux input harness and the other side plugged into the rca audio out of my new head unit then thats it. For power, I spliced the power leads of the new unit into the power leads of the main radio wiring harness so they both power on when the key is turned on. Only other thing I had to add was an aftermarket antenna if I ever need to use the radio of the new unit but the factory one works well.
