Don't forget about using the Hill Descent Control. Let the Rover do the work.

One more thought if that happens again...gently downshift so that engine braking can help slow you down. (Move shift lever left and back on 2013 & older or - paddle shifter on 2014 & newer)

Also worth engaging the low ration gears for steep hills in snow. Last winter I managed to fully control my LR3 on an extreme hill on black ice using HDC and low 1st manual. Slow but sure is always the best policy in such conditions, especially with a vehicle of this weight.

Something I've noticed over the years is that SUV's are the most frequent casualties of bad weather, mainly because so many drivers seem to believe they can defy physics.

Just drove through some light flakes in Chicagoland today and the stock contis were already losing grip on braking with just a light gloss on the road. There are some KO2s in my future methinks.

The stock Conti's are horrific in the snow. Even new (but broken in) they are just awful. Got Hakkas and have loved them for 6 winters now. This is the 7th winter and they still rock.

All my cars have winter tires (including my Miata).

The biggest issue is that AWD offers a tremendous improvement in traction with your foot on the gas, but when slowing down you have zero-wheel drive. All that matters is your tires.

Ahhh...misread...no KO2 for me...looks like some Nokian WR G4 is preferred. I don't want to run seasonal tires in this area. The fall and spring temp swings are far too much for me to go dedicated winter/summer combos.

Wow... I have never thought of using Low mode (let alone HDC) on slippery snow/ice descents. As I said earlier, I usually just shift manually into a low gear and that seems to do the trick.

I don't ever even use HDC, other than when I first got the truck and was playing around... it sadly isn't in my normal driving mix. So, I guess I also have to get used to that feature to be be able to pull it out in a pinch.

It's a blast out on the trails. That first time is a definite leap of faith as your front end tips over and down a hill and you have to force yourself to keep your foot off the brake...but it works like a charm. Hard not to smile when you realize how it's working on each corner as needed.
