My 2012 LR 4 has been retired from service. End of an era. It made it to 90K miles, but repair costs were starting to add up. I appreciate all of the advice here along the way. Jumping ship to Toyota. Giving up polish and style points, but hope to make it up in reliability. I think the off road abilities will be on par for my needs. Best wishes to all of this supportive community.

last thread prompt; when the time comes, what will you switch to?

Well I’m planning to take my LR3 to over 300,000 miles so it’ll be a while but at some point I’d love a low mileage TD5 or Puma Defender.

There is a definite transition underway on this forum as original LR4 buyers are moving on and new members are coming in with their used LR4 vehicles. Funny how second owners have more "wrenching" skills and aren't afraid to work on repairs themselves. Same thing happened with the Audi allroad forum and after a while there were posts and instructions on how to disassemble and repair any part of an allroad.

I'm at 110K miles and paid about $7K in repairs in 2019. Next year I may call it quits with my LR4 and get a Defender, if I like it of course. Still keeping my wife's LR4 for many many more years.

Very interesting and useful perspective on the long game here. I'm one of the new-to-me owners, having just recently purchased a 2013 LR4 and immediately putting about $3K worth of preventive maintenance into it. I figured I got it for $45K off retail so I don't mind putting maintenance dollars in. :)

So what was the straw that broke the camel's back?

I have definitely noticed a shift change from when I bought my LR4 almost 4 years ago to now. Many of the posters who were active here then have moved on to something else.

I can see myself going one of a few ways. Keep the LR4 for a few more years, get a diesel L405, a diesel Gladiator (which isn't available for another year or more, so that would be a combo with option 1), or a G-Wagon.

I'm not really sure the Defender is an option for me. I'll have to see one in person, I think. But I've come to feel like they look too much like a toy and not anything substantial.

I'm actually with you on the diesel L405 - I like the l405 design, much more so than the d5 discovery. That, and I think diesels make more sense for trucks this size. I just wonder if it's possible to get a diesel l405 with any factory off road equipment(low range, etc).

I believe all L405s have low range.

The only L405 you can get with a rear locker, however, is the supercharged V8. In true Land Rover fashion, the brakes on the supercharged V8 are such that 20" wheels barely fit--I guess it's so tight that Land Rover doesn't even offer them from the factory, and you've got to "proceed at your own risk" yourself.

So, in summary, you have an engine that people who offroad would want, a rear locker that people who offroad would want, but you can't get them both together. Further, you can't go any smaller than 20" wheels--if that--if you want the rear locker.

If that isn't Land Rover in 2010's, I don't know what is.

With the diesel or the SCV6, though, it seems like you get the same brakes as are on the D5. Meaning, you can get Compos to fit, and I'm guessing the Evo Corse wheels would fit, too:

Bad news is there are next to no off-road accessories for the L405. No sliders, no bumpers, etc. I'm hoping that will change as they trickle down the market, but who knows.
