went with the 4runner. agree that it is a step down except in anticipated reliability and resale. more than adequate for any off road activities for me.

the straw that broke the camel's back was combo of brakes (forgot how may sets I replaced), bushings and the tick-tock of a loose timing chain that I knew was looming.
If the timing chain tensioners have to be replaced you are almost "upside down" in it, financially speaking.

I enjoyed driving the LR4. Distinct. Not. too many on the road, but in the end I decided to tighten the financial belt. If I could keep it as a 3rd car, then perhaps it would be cool to have in the stable.

@horns, good luck with the 4Runner. Great vehicle. I actually just traded my $38K 2018 TRD off road in on a $22K 2013 LR4 (is that a reverse trade-in?) because I had always wanted to have an LR4. We should have traded!!!

Mine was making the sound for years, but progressively getting worse.
It wasn't just me hearing it. I was asked once if I had a diesel engine due to the noise. Bystanders would make comments about the sound at times. Maybe I could have got another 10K out of it. maybe not. I knew that would be one repair I would not be able to stomach based on what the remaining value of the truck was.

Yeah, don't really blame you.

For what it's worth, today I asked the Land Rover service guys at my dealership about the Td6 engine as I was picking up my LR4. They pretty much said they require a little more maintenance (a fuel filter is a 16k mile service item), but if they were buying, that's the engine they would go with.

I'll be honest. When I had my timing chain and guides replaced under warranty a year ago, I told them it was making a tik-tok sound. When I picked it up after the job, it made the same sound.

I think I, like a lot of people, started hearing ghosts every time I started the engine.
I have been paranoid about mine recently. When cold, it sounds like a diesel (with an extra air pump running) and when it warms up, it's a raspy mechanical sound that, again, sounds like a diesel, but there no sound of rattling or Legos in a bucket or anything like that, just a very diesel-like sound that is surprising from a gas engine. Is there a soundbite from a definite new chain guide candidate that I can compare it to? Otherwise I'm clueless. It runs OK otherwise, with no codes.

Well, as it turned out, when I had mine done they said my timing chain had stretched about half an inch, and the chain had chattered enough that my oil jets were almost totally worn away. They had to send in my old parts to the insurance company, but they let me look at them first, and the blade-guides had about a 1/4 dimple worn into them.

But it still sounded a lot the same with new parts.

I think the 5.0 makes a lot of injector noise. The bad timing chain sound is more like marbles.

I'm considering replacing the 3 next year now as the road salt takes hold. It's had a good run. But I might flip to a land cruiser or something else that lets me dedicate more time to the other rovers.

Just replaced my fuel tank shield/pan and rear brake lines as the shield had rusted through and lines were shaky. This product was used to help in the future - might be worth a look for any of your Rovers!

I bought my 2013 new and I am at about 72k now. Only use it for trips lately so I can preserve it a bit. Don't plan on selling it. I feel like having a cheaper daily driver for commuting is great for land rover owners. Let's you tear them apart and fix things and have a parts run vehicle. :p

I don’t know how similar they are, but I hope the 4 Runner isn’t as unreliable as the new Tacoma or you’ll be sorely disappointed. I have a friend who just returned his brand new one to the dealer and said nope! He got a tundra instead and loves it, but the tacos are not living up to the magical Toyota reliability.

Full disclosure: I can’t stand Toyota because of the attitudes of a majority of the owners in off-road oriented web content...

4Runner made in Japan. Tacoma made in Mexico. Big difference.
