Has anyone here supercharged or turbocharged their LR4?

I've said this before, but I think the LR4 (V8) has plenty of power. If you got this car to go fast, you got the wrong car. This is my relaxed family cruiser. On sport mode (which is too aggressive, IMO) the LR4 can move surprisingly quickly.

It accelerates smoothly and effortlessly in a luxurious way. I still rather would have had a turbo diesel, but so be it, I'll take the big V8. But I have zero motivation to try to make this car faster even if it were free just based on the weight, complexity, unreliability, and other issues that may be introduced.

I have proper sports or sporty cars to scratch the speed itch. And if I had to have one car to do it all, it sure as heck would not be an LR4.
That wasn't quite my point. I drive mine in the WV mountains quite often and when I am in a rather short passing zone on a 2ln road and need to pass a semi(or two), the 5.0 is underwhelming. It's adequate(with careful planning) and it's not slow by any means but compared to a Benz m278 twin turbo v8 in a gl450(which my friend has), I'll take the Benz motor over this any day, even if it makes less power on paper. This is why I think the 510hp aj133 motor would be much better in this truck, even if it can't handle worth a damn. Deeper reserves of power when you need it.

My “ridiculous question” was because someone started telling me how much better their Mercedes G-something or other was due to the turbo and extra horsepower, and despite my many attempts to peacefully assert a sort of “to each his own” ending to that topic, the guy seemed to want to hear me say that the Mercedes G was better because of power.
Myself, not knowing a lot about these things, wanted me bring up that the LRs have options too, but I didn’t say anything bc i didn’t know for sure.
I guess my question MUST be ridiculous to someone who knows as much as you do about these sorts of things. Since i don’t know, I ask. I’m not afraid to ask or to... I guess ridicule myself, so long as I’m learning something new.

LOL, I apologize & didn't intend to sound mean. Now that your intent is explained, it makes sense. I thought you were actually wanting to spend the minimum $10,000 USD to have a proper SC system installed. Hell, it would be cool, but there is basically no market for it.

G drivers have spent an actual ASSS-load of money to have an incredible vehicle that most of them don't actually "do" much in though. Which is laughable in a way. You could buy a nice cabin and an LR3 for the same as a new G63.

While more power is fun on pavement, it really doesn't bring much to the game off road in most situations compared to the adequate LR3/4 engines.

The only "ridiculous" sounding part was in the irony of the Land Rover motto "as slow as possible & only as fast as necessary" ;) and that there is basically no aftermarket for engine performance on the rovers. Honestly, if there were a $10k SC kit, I'd have probably had one installed 10 yrs ago.

Correct.

I find the default programming to be adequately lazy and chill. But the rpms basically live at 2,000 rpm or less. The sport setting holds gears longer allowing you to more easily access more of the power. My beef is that it's a little on the neurotic side. I don't need the LR4 to go all the way to 4-5krpm. I call it getaway car mode.

The particularly annoying thing is that you can't access manual mode without first going through sport mode - which again, is a little crazy. So say I see a hill coming up and wan tot hold the current gear (say it's 4th). In all likely hood the car will go crazy when I shift to sport mode and shift to 3rd or even 2nd before I up-shift to 4th manually. It's annoying.

One time I was late to a wedding and sport mode made the LR4 positively scoot through traffic. It did feel like I was running away from a hit squad, though. I probably got 5mpg during that time, but still.
Ohhhhhhh!!!! I was actually very confused about why there was an “S/M” designation there. I erroneously assumen Sport and Manual were one and the same. The way i was using it was:
1- slide left to “go into sport mode” and that would put me in first gear.
2- shift up for higher gears, and down for lower gears, that was it. Nothing else to it.

what i think you are saying is this:
1- slide left to go into sport mode. This is still an automatic shifting mode that simply holds the gears longer in order to access the higher rpms and thus more power.
2- the second i shift up and in doing so i am NO LONGER in sport mode. I am now in Manual mode and able to shift up and down at my own discretion.

is that correct or an i still misunderstanding?

Yes that is correct. Sport mode also(from experience) locks you out of 6th gear, 5th becoming your top gear then. Sport mode is useful with how it delays upshifts too, as the stock shifting program is way too slow and lazy.

My take has always been: the S/M is supposed to be a manual mode. It holds gears longer because it was waiting for you to manually shift, and it finally shifts the gears when it senses you've waited too long and the engine is near the maximum rpm to safely shift into the next gear.

That was basically my understanding. I never thought of it as "sport" (guess I should read the manual more often), but as "manual".

I would agree, except it doesn't how the current gear and it (usually) downshifts for you the instant you go to S. In other cars, it just shows and holds the current gear. That is appropriate. They will also hold the current gear to near redline. That's not how the LR4 does it.

I spend a lot of time in sport mode in my 2013 Lux. I like it more for the shift curve when slowing than accelerating. However, I don't get locked out of 6th gear. Sometimes I am driving at freeway speeds (70-75) when I realize I am still in Sport Mode but RPMs are the same as in Drive at same speeds.

@TrinidadLR4 and @Socialseb83 nailed it. And yes, it's weird to "pass through" Sport mode to get to manual mode. I agree with whoever said that when they slide over to sport, the engine is revving too high - I feel the same way but have gotten used to it.

It's definitely a two-mode thing. S....then M (once you up/down shift).
