Great to hear! I hope it's the least painful outcome.

Regardless, keep us posted of what the issue was as it seems to be a less common condition.

Promised to update you guys...
Independent shop says dealer is wrong, it's definitely not rods. They also say it's not the typical timing chain noise they hear from the 5.0's. They think maybe a timing chain guide bolt is broken. They say if it's just that and the guides, maybe $1200. If they find other top end stuff who knows, but they are confident the absolute max is $5-6k and that it does NOT need a new engine.
They also confirmed what people on here talk about but there seems to be some mysticism: LR did not "fix" the chain guide issue for the 2013's. All the 5.0's get it no matter what.
Hope this adds to the collective wisdom of this board. Will post back a post engine drop update.

I’m not fully convinced that all of them get the timing chain issues, but could be wrong. I will say, changing oil early and often seems to be the best remedy to keep the timing guides from wearing (anecdotally at least). I saw a report of a ‘10 with 300k and original guides not too long ago.

I also wonder if driving habits tend to wear the chain with stop/go or highway miles.

Yeah... she's done. They were wrong. They got it apart and said it needs a slew of work, about $8k... AND they can't guarantee it will get rid of the noise or what's causing it. It's not so much the $ as the uncertainty around reliability. If they said 8k and she should be good for another 25-50k miles, that's different math. I'm loyal but a numbers guy. It's worth 10-15k in trade. Can't put 8k in and not be fairly certain it will go another few years.
Well, it was fun boyz.

That's the problem. They want 8k for the timing chain, which they say is a little loose, the sprockets they say are clogged, and some miscellaneous. none of this is guaranteed to fix the original noise.
An interesting side note. They tech who worked on it wants to make a counter offer on any offer we get for it from Car Sense, etc. Hmmmmm.

If you search, I'm reasonably sure there is an indy shop in PA who has successfully done the timing chain job. An $8K quote for timing chain is on the extreme high end of normal, even by dealer standards in my area.

I would seriously consider taking or towing it to another shop. The fact that the "mechanic" is unable to come up with a targeted diagnosis would give me serious pause as to their technical competence. The fact that he then wanted to make me an offer on the truck would have me running out of there.

If it is making a noise, they can determine where that noise is coming from. Have they ever heard of a stethoscope? Hell, my Dad taught me the trick of using a long screwdriver with one end probing around while you stuck your ear to the other end. You can localize any noise, and once you know where it is coming from, you can determine what is there to be causing an abnormal noise.

Find a more competent shop is my best advice.

Seriously...I'd get the truck out of there! Sounds very shady for your mechanic to tell you he'd like to make an offer.
