Maybe I'm a snob, but the idea of putting Kirkland oil in my LR4 engine gives em the *******. The Mobil1 EP 5W-20 is pretty darn cheap at Walmart.

While I'm at it, I'm probably a snob by only feeding Shell 93 octane. In a pinch I'll do Mobil 93 or Sunoco 93.

The engine with the Ford bits hanging off of it? ;)

Sure! Hey, if had a Ford GT I also would not put Kirkland oil in it. ;) It has noting to do with "Ford." The Lotus Evora has a Camry engine it. I'd still look after it given the level of tuning.

Hi All - First off, great forum and great information. I have been lurking, reading, and learning a lot over the past few days. I am particularly grateful for the great write-ups on oil changes and diff/tc fluid changes. I will be doing my first DIY oil change on our 2012 LR4 as soon as the gear arrives from Amazon. Tired of the stealership prices. I have already ordered the Mobil 1 EP 5W-20 so that will be going in on this oil change.

Today, I got wind of the Costco deal for Kirkland Signature 5W-20 Full Synthetic that is $24.99 for (2) 5 quart jugs.

I am on my second round of the Kirkland Fully Synthetic oil in my Sport HSE - no issues whatsoever! I bought at my local Costco, $26 and change out the door, picked up a hot dog/Pepsi combo (hold the onions) for $1.50 on the way out. As mentioned and stated on the jug, it’s bottled by Warren - an old name, quality private branding oil company.

Costco’s Kirkland brand is known for quality — Their #1 selling item year after year is their Kirkland toilet paper...and fact is, they have engineers study and test toilet paper before they put the Kirkland name on it.....So, if they are that cautious about TP, I’m sure they take motor oil very seriously — the repercussions for bad motor oil would be more severe that an few bad squares of TP!

It would be really tough to return a few squares of failed TP, but with a failed motor you can for sure prove the oil caused issues.....think about it.

Valvoline bottles for NAPA, and they had full syn for 3.99 a quart last week - would you buy that? Of course you would unless you were total oil snob and didn’t want the neighbors seeing NAPA bottles in your trash....if that’s the case, move!! - you don’t need those type of neighbors.

Now, carry on as men........

And no....I don’t work for Costco!

I’ll stick with my current oil. It’s not that much of a cost difference throughout the year to run a premium oil. I tend to gravitate towards OE parts as well. I’m sure there are several aftermarket parts that would be perfectly adequate- but just less interested in taking the chance.

I’m snobbish with oil and all things Land Rover- I didn’t buy this thing because it was an economical choice.

I get it. The fancy oil has been good at keeping the timing tensioners and chain functioning until almost a 100k miles lol.

If you want to save $40 a year running a cheap oil in an engine known for already having issues, go right ahead. Roll those dice.

But if my engine goes south, I'd at least like to know I did everything I could to keep it running fine. That's worth way more than $40 to me.

Damn. Just did the deed and I am nonplussed.

Easiest oil change ever. Mightyvac really sucks. And then blows. Dipstick? Who needs one?

I may just buy the super duper premium stuff next go round to show that rover gal some love. With the cost savings over the dealership oil change prices, I can go platinum elite sapphire diamond juice for the next few flushes.

Cheers y'all.

I get it but I got ****** off early by dealer selling magic Castrol for $15/L. There is nothing magic about Castrol Professional. I can source Mobil 1 EP or Castrol Edge EP for about $7/L.

I only run about 16k kms/year max but have always done 2 changes (1 filter). So about 8k kms or 5k mile changes.

Coming on to 10 years of ownership:

I save $8 per litre x 8L = $64 per oil change

2 changes per year = $128 per year

10 years = $1280

That's $1280 saved up in the kitty for the tensioner replacement fund.. all funds in Cdn lol.

Yeah, we hear you. Nice thing about it being your truck- it’s totally up to you. I still think sourcing a quality oil at a reasonable price and investing in a mightyvac is the most sensible and reliable method. Gives the truck quality oil at a price I can afford, I know it’s done right, and I can do it in a tuxedo, sipping a dirty martini if I want.

Wow - doing an oil change in a tux...you really are a snob, I like that! Ha ha — kidding of course, all in good fun.

You say, “I still think sourcing a quality oil.....”. And based on your prior comments, that appears to say Kirkland brand is not quality oil. Do we know that to be factual? You’re attempting to introduce evidence that’s not proven, or entered. The judge is going to kick it out, and say, “whats next, move it along, I have a tee time at 1:15.”

You need to prove your case and provide the facts upholding your belief that Kirkland oil is bad, or low quality.

As to OE parts being the best - some truth to that, but also many aftermarket parts are equal to the OE stuff. I served many years as in-house council for a large manufacturer, that produced for automotive and heavy truck OEM’s, as well as several large aftermarket companies - lots of electronic and electromechanical items built on the same production lines, just stamped with different identifiers and put in different color boxes at the end of the line.....in my opinion, big name online retailers have tainted the reputation of the quality aftermarket parts suppliers — Offering OE parts and then a multitude of aftermarket versions, some of which can be 20-30% below the OE and true quality aftermarket stuff. The waters have been polluted big time, and it’s doubtful it will get better.

And lastly, I too love a good dirty martini - Vodka please, with 2 olives.

Cheers
