I have owned four LR4s and found somewhat of a barn find a year ago - 2016 w less than 4k miles. I have not used it as a daily driver and have only put about 1k miles on it. Factory warranty expires this June and Land Rover quoted me two options to extend with what is effectively a CPO warranty, which does not cover LCAs, radiator hoses, and other items considered wear and tear.

here is the question - is it worth spending $5,114 to get two more years or $6,313 to get three more years? Or should I just accrue the liability and use an Independent shop?

If you are only adding 1000 miles per year to this LR4 then no need to extend the warranty. From my experience, the expensive repairs and maintenance start at about 75,000 miles. Very unlikely you will spend $5114 in repairs in the next 2 years.

However, if you now have 5K miles on it, change the oil & filter.

I agree with Paul. unless you plan on adding a lot of miles, I'd self-insure instead. $5-6k pays for a lot of repairs and maintenance.

I agree with the above.

Just curious, what color combo & options are on the no-mile LR4? What a great find!

Light brown tan inside and out. khaikori Stone or something.

I have babied it and only put 300 miles on it. We have a white LR4 and suburban too.

that is a total ripoff. My servicing dealer sold me a 4 year and additional 40,000 mile plan for $4000. I just posted the other day about using it for the first time for lower control arm bushings.

I'd say, if they are willing to out the screws to you for what amounts to about $200/month for an ESP, I wouldn't be servicing it there, that's for sure. Screwing the customer is systemic I find. You can also find a good indie that sells ESPs if you really want one. But if you are only putting 1k miles a year on it, i"d pass too.

Are you a U.S. military veteran (sorry, Canucks)? Pentagon Federal Credit Union offers extended vehicle warranties -- https://www.penfed.org/auto/extended-warranty/. For your vehicle you can get 5 years or until the odometer reaches 100,000 miles, whichever comes first--with $0 deductible--for $2995 (after becoming a member, of course).

I had a look at my 2010 spreadsheet. After the original warranty ran out at 80k kms (50k miles) in 2013 my 2010 has in seven years consumed $3210 CAN ($2100 US) in items that would have been covered by warranty over about 120k kms (180k kms total).

Is that a LR plan or some other insurance? Could you let us know? My factory warranty runs out in a few months.
Thank you

Frank,

It's First Automotive. My dealer sells it. They gave me the choice of JLR backed but said it sucked and we not a JLR plan but a 3rd party anyway. They told me First Automotive would cover lower control arm bushing. When I bought it a year ago. Sure enough, they did cover them. I paid $0 and got a rental car to boot!

I bought the plan for peace of mind. This is my wife's car. She loves it and doesn't want to get rid of it. I would have bought her a new G-Wagon or 450 or whatever she wanted. She wanted to keep this car. I bought it right with just 7k miles on it for a great price (about $7k under low retail according to KBB), so I feel like I am still ahead of the game and don't have to worry about this for a few more years.

The dealer wanted $4995 for this plan, but I negotiated with them and got them to $4k. Still sounds like a crap load of money considering I paid $1800 for my 8 year. 125,000 mile plan on my 2018 Super Duty Diesel.
