Slightly off topic, but was a official or semi-official reason for the change to the S/C 6 cylinder ever given?

I would assume it had to have related to LR's CAFE calculation or similar since it is literally the same block with two plugged cylinders and a S/C bolted on top.

On it's face, it always seemed bizarre to me to incur the engineering/development cost to come up with a kludgey end product that added complexity and reduced power.

I heard at the time of the change that it was "to reduce weight", but that was before we realized it was the same block with a relatively heavy additional lump of metal bolted to the top of it.

For that matter, since I have never been under the hood of a V6, are the cylinder heads the same with no intake/exhaust ports machined at the rear or are they truncated at the rear with shortened camshafts up top?

not completely sure why they cut them off. I believe since ford provided the block they decided it was cheaper then having to manufacture their own V8 with 2 different types of pistons and intake manifold for the supercharged and naturally aspirated version. So I believe it was to save money as well as make it more appealing to the people who wanted to save a bit of money on gas (even though it didn’t do all that much). In my opinion Land Rover should have thrown in a supercharged V8 into the LR4 just as an option, though it would have been unnecessary it would have been great fun especially paired with the 8 speed. I also wish they did this option for the D5 (what was supposed to be the svx). I’ve talked to so many LR and D5 owners that have told me they would have either bought the D5 with a supercharged V8 or the svx in a heartbeat if they could have. I’m still really disappointed the svx never made it to production because that car immediately stole my heart when I saw it.

It was to increase fuel economy. The V8 probably would have beat it if they put the 8 speed behind it. I would avoid the SCV6 versions. Added complexity and maintenance, less power and a good chance it does not have low range. Lack of low range will mean no overlander will buy it out the other end..

I am also looking for a 2016 LR4, white w/beige interior and must have the HD package. Not only for the locking diff and low gear....but the HD package includes space for a full sized spare. What the hell good is this “off-road capable” vehicle if you can’t carry a full size spare??? Anybody else as angry about this as I am??

No need to be angry about the full size spare as any LR4 can carry a full size spare. (It's not like a Q7 without any spare tire)

You don't need the heavy duty package if only adding a full size spare. Just swap the donut spare for a full size wheel & tire. You do need the HD pack if you want low gear on a 2014 or newer LR4.

Jodi, in the research I've done over the last several months - you're in luck. The majority of 2016 inventory has been the white/almond combination. The Corris Gray or Black with almond interior that I'm searching for has been much harder to come by (most have ebony interior). Going to test drive a 2015 Corris Gray this morning!

I have a 2013 that I ordered in Corris with Arabica/Almond and I love it. Most of the interior is almond except for the seats and the tops of the doors and dash. And since I bought it I've had the second row wrapped in the LR seat covers in Almond to protect the leather from the kids (pricey but a great move, by the way - awesome quality and perfect fit).

I would only get an HD package regardless of the year. Keep looking until you find one, seriously. The SCV6 is a fantastic motor if you go that route but you would definitely want the HD package so you get the low gear. I've owned 2 rovers with the SCV6s including a RRS, it's great, only quirk is the same quirk with the SCV8 found in the RRS/Full size...the actuator spring can get noisy after time, especially at start up on cold days. But that is the case on most supercharged vehicles. And honestly...if you plan on off roading, the SCV6 is not different that the 5.0 V8, SCV8 or TD6 once you engage terrain response as it limits the amount of torque to each wheel. The 14+ has the 8 speed which is great but not all that noticeable. Test drive both though, I doubt you will tell a difference so just make sure you get what you want. Don't bother with the surround cameras if you plan on getting steel bumpers....you just end up throwing those out. Best of luck
