Doug, my drain plug I'd compromised.

@jaamrode how much could you extract?
What if the vehicle were inclined?
Did you "hit bottom" with your hose?

Thanks all....
You only get about half the oil out. The hose hits the pan before it drops down into the “sump pit”,for lack of a better term.

I buy my oil and filter and take it down to a trustworthy local shop that charges me $25 for labor. It's certainly worth it to avoid the hassle. However, I do maintain my own diffs and transfer case.

Mityvac is the ****, the LR4 was made for it - must have changed the oil on over 50 different cars in my lifetime and the LR4 is the easiest by far with the oil filter up top and the fill oil has the tube for extraction right there as well. You guys are just to **** with your 'you cant get all the oil out' concerns - you never get all the oil out anyway but thats not the point, 6 fresh quarts is good enough mang, stop sweating the insignificant amount left in the motor.

That's the LR4. The LR3 - which is the OP's model - requires removing two quite heavy skid plates under the sump to get at the drain plug and filter. The oil then shoots out horizontally.

on my old Xterra, i had a fumoto drain valve. I bet if you got creative, you could rig up the mityvac to connect to the drain valve, open the valve, and suck the oil out. If you can get the filter out without pulling the skid you'd be set. Maybe a remote filter mount?

Yeah, works well on my LR4, use it all the time. Measured the oil coming out and going in, and can confirm the Mityvac gets all of the oil. LR3 might be a little different with the oil pickup pipe location. Somethings about the Mityvac. 1. add a little Pex valve to the rubber adaptor end of the thicker (main) pipe great for controlling flow rather than relying on the discharge/evacuate valve. 2. Epoxy the rubber reduction adaptor to the end of the thicker pipe (if you only use one reduction pipe) stops it from falling off and reduces suction loss. Overall- if the Mityvac can work for your situation, highly recommended.
