Which it can't lol.
Which it can't lol.

The D5 has worked for many of Kingley Holgate's expeditions the last four years including the 12,000 mile Extreme East Expedition which incorporated a high-speed run through Somalia with 25 armed guards as their security detail. They said they already had 80,000 miles on the truck when they took that on.

One could argue that he's a Land Rover Ambassador and has been supported by Land Rover for many many years and has a support crew of Defenders. All of that is true. But the vehicles have been running all over Africa with his expeditions - they must be basically sound or I'm guessing he would have asked to go back to an LR4 or another old Defender. Speaking of which - wonder when LR will give him a new Defender?

Given this, I'm sure a D5 can drive up a forest service road a few miles for some camping. Jeez.

Bit off topic.

We are assuming a D130 is around the corner... But business plans for many car manufacturers have changed big time in the past 90 days, and news today doesn't sound so rosy for JLR as far as new models are concerned, see link below. They may end up cutting one or more existing models instead... But which one? The Velar? Although it is probably the sharpest looking Range Rover, it always seemed a bit pointless to me. But I would not bet on a D130 to arrive any time soon. After all, Land Rover already has a proper 7-seater and cargo hauler in its lineup, and I just don't see them canning the Disco line, no matter how poor sales have been up to now.

Hopefully they won't cut anything in the end. Jaguar is definitely in bigger trouble than Land Rover.

I'll be the first to say that I really appreciate hearing these kinds of personal experiences. It's easy to have a strong opinion on a vehicle when you're trash-talking, entirely another to provide an informed opinion from experience. Is it safe to say that you and your spouse are sticking with the D5 and not even considering the Defender? Sounds like it's working for you and you have no reason to consider changing.

Thanks! I know how easy it is to hate on the new stuff. I hated the D5 when I first saw it. And just watching the Defender love/hate thread, our passions run deep!

Yeah, for now we’re sticking with the D5. We sat in a Defender at the dealership last week and it’s nice, but I just don’t like how little space there is coming from an LR3. I’ve no doubt it will get the job done off-road, but for us overlanding and traveling is so much more than only conquering the toughest trails.

Like I said, the new Defender make help D5 sales as some people may want more luxury for the $75K price tag and may not need extreme off road capability. I need unstoppable ability in a blizzard with snow mode and beach sand traction. Defender and D5 can do both. Maybe I want a D5 first row for luxury and the Defender rubber way-back for our wet Labrador Retriever.

That would be a great rig for sure! I’d sign up for that.

I should also say that it’ll be a much closer comparison once the used Defenders show up. We bought our D5 used and got a killer deal on it (Lux version, with extended warranty to 100k miles) for $42k. We had to drop some cash to downgrade the wheels to 20” but other than that and adding the tow package, it’s just a bit above what I bought the LR3 for 13 years ago. So my bias may be heavy on saving $30k between similarly capable vehicles (tho the D5 does have quite a bit more room as far as I can tell).

Now I gotta find a new home for these gunmetal gray 21” wheels haha.

I am sure the D5 is more than capable on the trail however the loss of stadium seating, split tailgate and the fact it looks like a bloated Ford Explorer with a giant ass means it should burn.

I am with umbertob who called us all out for polluting this excellent LR4/Defender thread with all this talk on the D5. Perhaps we can move over to a D5/Defender forum. :)

Sorry for contributing to the thread-hijack!

We now return to our regularly scheduled LR4 vs. Defender chat....
