Mine does this also -- and my X5 did it too. Easiest fix I found is to turn up the radio ;-).

Some day, when I really get sick of it, I'll try some silicon back there. I haven't really looked, but it certainly sounds like some sort of dust cover is rubbing against a trim panel.

Mine is in the shop for this right now getting a new Clock Spring put in. I purchased mine used about a year ago w 53k miles on it....it had the sound when I purchased it. I immediately took it to LR and had power steering flushed, along w 55k maintenance....the previous owned had it routinely serviced, but not at by LR, so I dont think real maintenance was done other than oil change. Regardless, the PS flush did not help. I shared the 2017 Rack and Pinion blast concerning re-lubricating. LR said they will do if turns out to need. So, to get it diagnosed is $400, if i choose to not get fixed what they find. Being that I do not want a clock spribg going out on me while in motion, im getting it fixed. It is $1400. My car is under 3rd party warranty, but they dont cover Clock Spring. I'll report back if this solves it.

So I had mine in for this same thing and they indicated they "lubricated" the clock spring - made no discernible difference to me - going to to take it back. Again not sure if this is internal to the clock spring mechanism or simply that the part touching the mechanism as the wheel turns needs to be lubricated....?
