Hey all -

I have a 2017 Discovery 5 Diesel that came with 21" rims - specifically 275/45R21. When I got the car I didn't realize that it was impossible to find off-road or all-terrain tires in this size. I really wish the dealer would've mentioned it as I made it clear I wanted the ability to do some more adventure oriented travel.

I want to do a road-trip up to Alaska from California and do some light off-roading/overlanding and so I'm looking to get your advice on what rim/tire combination I should try to put together. From what I've read on various forums most people recommend that one should go down to 18" rims but then I'm assuming I'd have brake clearance and offset issues - Is 20" feasible if I do a 255/55r20 and put a 1.5" lift kit on the car? Or does that just not make sense at all?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

I swapped the stock 255/55-20 Goodyear Eagles and 20" x 8.5" stock wheels for a set of 285/50-20 Nitto Terra Grappler G2s on 20" x 9.5" Redbourne wheels (including the spare) and have no clearance problems--and that's without lifting it. Of course I still have the capability to select Off Road Height 1 or Off Road Height 2 and let the Air Suspension raise the vehicle 1.6" or 3.0", respectively, but I didn't want to use Johnson Rods or another type of lift kit to permanently raise the Disco's center of gravity, which would have adversely affected stability and handling at highway speeds (99% of the driving I do).

Same story here. Just bought a 2017 Discovery 5 diesel with 275/45/21's and wanted something more off road friendly. I did some research and went with the following:

20" Range Rover wheels - https://www.ebay.com/itm/114276256158?ViewItem=&vxp=mtr&item=114276256158. Reputable dealer when I looked into them. The picture makes them look purplish, but they are black. Same width and offset as the 20" wheels that came on the Discovery and my center caps fit perfectly.

TPMS Sensors - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0828D5J1D/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. The tire shop that assembled everything for me (Big O Tires) said their hand held programmer would only program 3 different brands, and this was not one of them. There wasn't much info out there on TPMS sensors and the D5, so I was just kind of hoping for the best here. The Discovery apparently started reading these right away on its own as I never had a light come on and it shows the tire pressure at each corner.

Tires - https://www.discounttiredirect.com/buy-tires/falken-wildpeak-a-t3w/p/26538. I was originally going to go with the BFG K02's, but they were on a 6 week backorder. I read some reviews on these and have no regrets. They had a 2 day flash sale at the time, so I got them for another $20 off per tire. I got the 275/55/20's. They look great and I've experienced no rubbing or clearance issues.

I got them mounted and balanced for $107. I love the setup and how they look. The picture shows it in off-road height. Now I just need to sell the old wheel/tires to recoup some of the cost...

Edit to add - I have no lift.

Those tires (and wheels) look great. Good to know you can get a decent 20"tire. I have 21's currently, and am about to turn the lease in so I just left the winter tires on, not too bad off road!! I've been a big K02 fan as well, but wouldn't wait that long for them. New work lease: Defender or Discovery? Test drive the Defender tomorrow.

My spare set of wheels off of my LR4 with 275/55/20 BFG KO2s. Going on 50k miles on the tires and still life left. Tow a 25' AS with the rig all over the place and works wonderfully. Purchased before our first XC tow so we could light off-road out west when we first got the car. No lift, no rods, no rubbing. Originally had the 22" stock wheels and when I rolled the tire/wheel combos next to each other it was probably 1-3cm different overall height - stops just fine as well.

Very nice! I would have strongly considered black if it weren't for the summer temps here. It's not a proper summer in Vegas if it doesn't hit 115 in July (last night's low temperature was 93° F).

So I had the same issue. I went with Black rhino 20 Barstow's and Pathfinder tires. 265/55/20. I have taken them off-road and on long highway trips and they have done awesome.
