I would be surprised if many offer third party warranties on Rovers especially 7 years and older. If they do they are likely expensive. Companies don't offer warranties out of the kindness of their heart. On average they take in much more than they pay out or they would not be in business. You either pay today (warranty purchase) or you pay later (repairs). There is also the time value of money consideration but I digress. For me the LR4 is a third vehicle that I twist wrenches on mostly. No warranty for me. YMMV. The money I saved by not extending the warranty I can put towards by crossover or timing tension-er fund lol.

I bought my 2013 with 72,000 miles on it and wrestled with the warranty - they had one available (third-party) with three levels of protection. I bought but then cancelled the premium insurance which was $7K for 4 more years and covered absolutely everything other than wear and tear items like tires. Ultimately I decided that rather than wait for things to fail, (perhaps catastrophically like the water coolant crossover pipes), I'd put the funds into the vehicle proactively so I ended up taking about $6K of that and doing a bunch of preventive maintenance as well as new wheels and tires. Personally I thought it was better to fix things before they broke, especially for the vulnerable and high likelihood failure points. Hope that helps in some way. You really are "making a bet" either way as you say so for me, I decided I'd rather invest up front to head off issues, vs. pay for a policy that *might* cover me AFTER an issue happens.

I bought my 2013 almost two years ago. At the time, it had 68k and had the remainder of a CPO warranty which was set to run out 3 or 4 months later. This was my first LR and I had heard all the panic mongering and rumors so I figured the warranty gave me a layer of assurance and feel-good vibes that helped seal the deal. I did not use the warranty once, it ran out and if I still had it, I wouldn't have used it anyway. When I bought it, I did basic preventative maintenance - changed out all the fluids, brushed up on the failure points(WP, coolant pipes, LCAs, trans pan/filter) and replaced those over the course of the following year. At this point, it has given me no issues and I am starting to trust it more and more(maybe foolish, who knows). Anyway, sample size of one but this is my situation.

As mentioned above, third party extended warranty companies not covering LR's including a southern Calif. company called Western General.
Hard as hell to get approval any repairs by them stalling for weeks,, hell months one time.
Coverage for the failed part only plus way over too epensive diagnostic fees.
My case the PITA to dealership by a demanding nit picking doctor that had 7/100K mile Western General coverage. I had 23 1/2 months to get everything sorted out.
Even before the regular LR warranty expired LR of North America didn't give a crap about covering repairs delaying until it had expired, noted by the doctor telling me.
My case extended warranty was 100% free plus an attorney letter head with threats to get their attention, I was not going away.
They tried to wiggle out of not replacing a defective engine front cover with oil pump and pressure bypass relief to be installed on a completly new factory shortblock.
Before this warranty replacing only one leaking steel embossed head gasket with a later thicker composition upgrade gasket on one bank only, yeah right 6/10 compression ratio reduction vs other bank. Replacement of one time use head bolts not covered as well replacing opposite bank head gasket cost plus labor. After more attorney pressure new front cover with pump finally approved as it would of destroyed the new engine. Best part ending up costing Western General $11,400 when I was done nearing end of coverage after adding both sun roof tracks replaced. Best part no 3.9 short block available, I found a new factory 4.6 short block in the US saving them money vs shipping a POS 3.9 fron England. Service writer and mechanic (both personal friends) at LR making sure anything and everything else was written up billing Western General's warranty. Several months after coverage expired , LR service writer notified me that Delorean, Ferrari and LR were no longer taking extended warranty contracts by Western General.......~~=o&o>.......

I have no idea what the warranty will cover... but I've had a lot of trouble with Land Rover Santa Monica's service dept. I much, much prefer the independent tech experience.

I have also had bad experiences with Santa Monica during the last fourteen years of knowing them with my 06 LR3, 13 and 16 LR4. Have stopped going to them unless absolutely necessary and no other options available, even though they are like only 3 or 4 miles away from me.

I currently take my 16 to a service manager i have known for a few years now, really helpful, super professional, loves and cares about what he does, and really works with you troubleshooting issues, etc.

I basically follow him wherever he goes. He was at Encino first so I brought the truck there for service. He then left to becoming the LR field engineer. So I had no choice and continued with Encino, but two real shady and bad experiences with Encino were enough for me to look for another place. Then found out that he was back as the service manager at South Bay, so thats where I get the service done these days even though its quite a ways from me.

yes for sure, straight factory LR warranty is not something they said would be an option. thanks.

My factory runs out soon so I am fishing for one too, and was told the same thing by a couple of dealerships I called up that the factory warranty could not be extended.

But just to confirm, I called LRNA and the customer service rep transferred my call to the "extended warranty" department. The LR rep at this extended warranty dept told me that LR offers official extension thru a company called Assurant, via dealerships, so I should call a dealership.

Anyways I recently chatted with my service manager who deals with the insurance companies on a day-to-day basis and who I trust more than anybody at LR at this point. He suggested another insurance company citing that he has had no issues with them getting the customers reimbursed. It used to be called Red Shield but now its called Veritas.

He said that the other insurance companies he deals with would not cover certain things citing "Consequential Damage" or a term something to that effect, I cant remember exactly. So lets say a part fails that causes engine damage, the insurance company would only cover the failed part and not the engine!

I have been quoted the following rates (with $200 deductible) from the dealership for my 16 with 15.6k miles on it:

7 years / 100k miles (+15.6k current miles on vehicle = 115.6k miles total): $5607
5 years / 60k miles: (+15.6k current miles on vehicle = 75.6k miles total): $4469
4 years / 48k miles: (+15.6k current miles on vehicle = 63.6k miles total): $4369

Dealer says that the coverage is top tier (called "Premier") from the available five tiers that they offer (attached pic for the different tier options.)

Its transferrable and on the surface at least it looks like it covers everything cept the regular wear and tear items which the factory does not cover either.

My factory expires in a week or so have to decide soon what I wanna do.
